This is a question for Nathaniel really (but anyone can chip in)

Nate, - hope you don't mind me asking this: I seem to remember you getting your 600D not long after me, then in next to no time at all you had a 60D as well.

I am just curious:

1. Why did you feel the need to buy both?
2. What benefits does the 60 give you?
3. Are there anythings about the 600 that you would miss if you only had the 60? (just thinking that the 600 is 'relatively' new whereas the 60 has been around a while, so there are I think a few bits of new tech on the 600 that are not on the 60, even though the 60 is the higher spec camera).

You can see where I am going with this, I love the 600d, but I like the heavier weight of the 60, I like the longer body and the top mounted lcd- so I am wondering whether to upgrade (as I cannot afford both - really want a 5D mk111 and a bunch of L lenses- but dream on ).

any other thoughts? - is there a new version of the 60 due out any time soon that would be worth waiting for?

Thanks all

Ian

Hi All, I caught some of this last night and found it really useful.

It is a 3 day, live webinar on speedlites it is set in pacific time so I could not stay up to watch it all but what I watched was better than sitting in front of the TV as usual.

It is free to watch live, (I think they are going to sell the edited course after as a dvd) last night was basics, much of which I knew but still, filled in some gaps and consolidated some things for me (might stop me asking Trev all the time ) - and I have learned that 'you never know as much as you think you know, there is always somthing to learn).

Tonight it is taking the flash off camera (gives you some idea of the detail - a whole day on 'ON' camera flash!) there are live questions and asnwers by email and a small group of on-site students - it is basically a window into a real live class that would cost you a fair price to attend for real.

I'll be watching as much of tonight's as I can

here is the link:

Hi All, I have been playing with my 430 EX11 and trying to work out the HSS.

Wanted to use it off camera the other day and wanted to have a faster shutter speed than the 1/200th sync speed of my 600D - I could not get it to go higher, even though I had the flash set to HSS.

I just tried it now ON camera and it works great, set the flash to HSS and leave in ETTL, set the camera to manual and could dial in any shutter speed I want, got really consistent result every time.

I suspect I already know the answer; that it will only work off camera (on a 600D at least) by means of ETTL cable and it won't work for some reason in wireless mode

Can anyone confirm this for me or am I missing something?

Cheers

The Idea

A great opportunity for us all to have the same challenge (and subject) across the country*
Would anyone be interested in a competition where the challenge is to take the best photo of the Olympic torch, torch bearer or a member of the supporting entourage as it passes through your town or a town near you?
* - Sorry to those who are not in the UK - but I hope you will still vote!

In brief

Choose your best image of the torch and or bearer or entourage. Ensure your image is a maximum of 800 pixels along its widest/longest edge, up to 800Kbytes in size and with the EXIF data intact. The images must have been taken by you using a Canon EOS camera during the period of the competition and be in jpeg format. The images will be posted in a temporary album on the forum after the entry date has closed. After this time registered users will be able to submit anonymous votes for their favourites. Everyone can be a ‘judge’ – you’re voting for the best pictures in your opinion.

Prize

None, other than the right to use “Winner of the EOS-Magazine-Chasing the Light competition” bragging rights, and may be a cunning fashioned Avatar

RULES

ENTRY

Photos must have been taken (dated in EXIF) between 19th May 2012 and 28th July 2012 inclusive and arrive in the organisers inbox (see email details below) before the midnight on the 29th July 2012.

You must be the photographer who created the images and a registered user of the eos-magazine-forum in order to enter the challenge.

You must ensure your images are a maximum of 800 pixels along its widest/longest edge, be in Jpeg format and the file size must not exceed 800Kbytes (the EXIF data must be intact so that this can be verified by the organiser)

Entries should contain no watermarks, distinguishing effects or borders, and must have been taken using a Canon EOS camera.

Images should be sent to the photo_63@hotmail.co.uk and you must indicate in the email (a) your real name, (b) your forum name and (c) a title for each of your photos. Please put “EOS Photos” in the email subject line. Any entries that are not clearly identifiable and verifiable won't be entered into the challenge.

The organiser may also enter the challenge (the entries are anonymous and the organiser is trusted to record votes accurately).

Only one entry is permitted for this challenge. But if you want to withdraw an entry, or replace it, this is allowed providing it is done before the closing date for entry and you make it clear in an email to the challenge organiser what you want doing - so please ensure the email contains clear instructions and (if required) your replacement picture.

This thread is for advice on resizing or clarification of the rules and not for posting images. However, do feel free to use the thread to let others know you have entered!

VOTING

All registered members of the eos-magazine-forum may vote, including those who submit an entry.

You may not vote for your own entry.

Voters should list their five choices in order of preference, by entry number to avoid confusion.

Points will be allotted as follows: Five points to first choice, four to second choice, three to third choice, two to fourth choice and one to fifth choice.

This competition is just for fun and by entering or voting you accept to abide by the rules and spirit of this competition, and acknowledge that the decision of the challenge organiser is final.

Photos will be posted for seven days as soon after the closing date as possible for registered users to vote upon.

Votes will be accepted up to midnight on the seventh day.

Results will be announced early in the following week.

Pictures will be removed from the temporary Album approximately a month after the winner is announced.

Remember it's just for fun - Good luck!

I have had some images printed as a half page spread in a regional newspaper. The newspaper is now telling me that I will not be paid as I am a "reader". I e-mailed them the images and they accepted them, in the same way that I have done with other publications on several occasions.. At no point did I feel that I had to ask specifically for payment. They sell their newspaper, but appear unwilling to pay for the content as I did not specifically ask for payment...

Your thoughts please?
I haven’t upgraded to IE9 yet so I can’t compare against FF 12.
Encouraged by the weather forecast I went to Bodnant Garden, a National Trust property near Conwy. Not as sunny as predicted and very chilly which probably accounted for the lack of butterflies.
Still, there was plenty of colour to be enjoyed.

I will break this into two posts - Saturday I managed to get access all areas for the Red Bull Pro Nationals at Landrake Moto Parc near Plymouth. While I have taken plenty of Enduro bikes, this was totally new to me, so great fun... Took far too many shots, tried numerous techniques and speed.

1 - Trying to capture the scale of the event, I quite like this, ok bike in the air is frozen, but liked the 4 bikes in the back...

2 - Being able to get under the bikes was awesome, I did end up being covered in mud.

3 - basically used 2 lenses, the old trusty 35-350L which is an awesome lens for this sort of event, also was able to use my Siggy 12 -24mm - this was taken at 12mm... We had the most wonderful fluffy white clouds, a lot of the shots were taken with flash to try to fill in some details.

4 - there were times when I was able to get a bit too close - again at 12mm

5 - final shot - going for a bit of flying mud...

£15 entrance fee - an amazing day out, great fun and well worth a go...

I am looking at purchasing my first L lens.
I am considering the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
Main use would be as a general lens( I know it's heavy, but not an issue), and to get me closer to the birds.
Would like a 100-400 but think the 70-200 would give me more flexibility particularly with f2.8 throughout.
Flashcamera.co.uk are offering the 70-200 at £1599 and they say that I would get a Uk invoice which would qualify for Canon Cashback (currently £175 on this lens). They have also offered a further £25 discount if I pay by bank transfer. However I would be loathe to give up the protection of paying by credit card.
I would appreciate any thoughts and experience with this lens and/ or this seller.

High dynamic range/multiple exposure in DPP
The latest version of Canon's Digital Photo Professional software offers tools for high dyanamic range (HDR) and multiple exposure (ME) processing. We'd like to see good examples of the use of these tools - the final images and the intermediate images. You can download the latest version of DPP at http://software.canon-europe.com/

Group photographs
We need images of groups - which we are defining as three or more people (right up to large groups of 20 or more). Comparison photos are of particular interest - with and without fill-in flash, for example, or different compositions of the same group of people. We will post further details of specific requirements in the next few days.

E-mail editorial@eos-magazine.com or phone Robert Scott on 01869 331741 if you have any queries about these photo requirements.

Part of the appeal of EOS magazine is its technique section. This is packed with information to help readers get more from their EOS camera. Each issue contains a mix of articles covering areas such as camera modes, lenses, flash, choosing and using Canon accessories, and photographing specific subjects with EOS cameras. Many of the articles are written in-house, but we welcome material from contributors.

The emphasis must be on EOS. We are not interested in articles which could appear in other photo magazines. For example, there is no point in submitting a general article on landscape photography. To be of interest to EOS magazine, a landscape article must talk about the subject in terms of EF lenses and the controls on EOS cameras. Any photographs submitted with features must have been taken with an EOS camera (though not necessarily a Canon lens). Study the magazine carefully to see how EOS Technique features are written. Information is presented in small easy-to-follow sections with extended captions and helpful margin notes. Ideally, material should be submitted in this style.

Level of information
EOS magazine readers range from total beginners to experienced professional photographers. You have to write for all these abilities. Margin notes are used to explain basic photographic terms without alienating the more knowledgeable reader. Contributors are expected to supply these notes. Although many EOS cameras share similar features, they do not all work in the same way. If you have the information available, differences in operation should be listed, and it should be made clear which cameras can and cannot be used for a particular technique. Where appropriate, information should be submitted as a chart or table.

Added value
Technique features should be given ‘added value’. For instance, in a feature about bounce flash, include a side box about taking better pictures with the built-in flash. This helps to ensure that there is something of interest for all readers, even if they don’t own the featured equipment. In addition to the main body of text, there should be tips on taking photographs similar to those used in the article, or interesting items about the subject. Technique features vary in length from two to eight pages.
We recommend that you contact EOS magazine before you start work on a feature. We may already be working on a feature with similar content, or we may feel that your idea is not suitable for EOS magazine at the moment. Send an e-mail with an outline of your proposal to:

The EOS magazine picture library is now entirely digital and we only accept digital image files
• Images should be submitted as TIFF or JPEG files on CD or DVD (ISO 9600 format for compatability with PC and Mac computers).
• Use a file size of 5B to 80MB at 300dpi when uncompressed (saved JPEG files will often be smaller than this). We do not accept low-resolution images for the library.
• We prefer unsharpened images (in-camera sharpening is acceptable)
• We prefer sRGB colour space, but Adobe RGB colour space is accepted.
• If possible, captions and credits should be attached to each image file using the IPTC facility found in many image editing programs. Otherwise, a covering letter should provide this information for each image. The EXIF data automatically saved with the image file will usually provide all the information we need about the camera, lens and exposure.
• Please include a set of thumbnail prints of your images. We will use these for reference only, so print quality is not important.
• Your full name, postal address and e-mail address should be attached to both the CD and thumbnail print-out.
• DO NOT send image files by e-mail unless specifically requested.

Send your photographs to:
EOS magazine Photo Library, The Old Barn, Ball Lane, Tackley, Kidlington, Oxfordshire OX5 3AG.
If you have any queries, please e-mail: editorial@eos-magazine.com or telephone 01869 331741.

EOS magazine runs an in-house picture library which welcomes all types of images shot with EOS cameras and accessories. The library provides...

EOS magazine runs an in-house picture library which welcomes all types of images shot with EOS cameras and accessories. The library provides photographs for many of the technique articles published in the magazine. All pictures must be taken with an EOS camera (though not necessarily an EOS lens). We welcome images from photographers based in the UK or around the world.

While we always need outstanding images, we particularly require images which demonstrate photographic techniques that can be carried out with EOS cameras. These include exposure compensation, fill-in flash, spot metering, bounce flash, multiple exposures, macro photography, fast AF function, image stabilisation lenses, depth-of-field - in fact, any photo technique or camera function or feature you can think of.*

Unlike most other photo libraries, we require full details of the equipment and techniques used for each picture.*Ideally, this information should be included in the image file. Many image software programs allow you to add IPTC data, such as captions. You should also add your name and, if possible, e-mail address. We use an image management system which allows us to display this information with the image. The system also displays all the EXIF data, providing details of shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera, lens, etc.

Comparison shots
Comparison shots are one of the strengths of the EOS magazine photo library. The demonstration of a filter, for example, is only really effective if pictures taken both with and without the filter are published. If you are showing how a reflector is used, take some pictures without the reflector. If you are demonstrating spot metering, take a picture to show the same subject shot with centre-weighted metering. Almost every technique will benefit from comparison pictures - and this increases your publication fees!

Sequences
Using a sequence of photos is often a good way to illustrate a point. For example, take pictures from the same position using different settings of a zoom lens, or lenses of different focal lengths. Not only will you increase the chance of a sale, but you’ll also get paid more if a sequence of pictures is used.

This proved easier said than done as they were either feeding in dark shadows under the shrubs or flitting between branches and not stopping for breath.

Keep an area of the garden for interesting and attractive weeds.

Here's Yellow Archangel, Lamiastrum galeobdolon -

It's one of the dead-nettles, but yellow dead-nettle doesn't sound as interesting.... There is a garden variety with variegated leaves (sometimes called the aluminium plant because of the metallic look of the patches on the leaves).

And this is Sweet Woodruff, Galium odorata (odorata reflecting the sweet smell) -

Nice plant - I like the whorls of leaves - but a bit of a thug in flower-beds...
Wasn't happy with any shot out in the garden - there is virtually no detail showing in the white flowers because there is no detail to show, if you get my drift...
So, brought it indoors to play around a bit -

Had to have a background that gave some contrast with the white flowers -

- but black was going too far, so I "overcooked" it a bit in DPP, going almost abstract -

The pair of coots that nested on the island on our pond have now produced 4 babies that have survived a week now. They are wonderful parents and becoming quite tame as they feed bread to the babies so are pleased to see me! We have probably had 100 mallard ducklings and not one survivor, so I will be interested to see if the coots last! I had always suspected moorhens or coots of killing the ducklings, but I now think it is the other mallards protecting their space. Also, only the female duck looks after the young and they whizz about everywhere from an early age. The coots both do the parenting and run a very tight ship - I could watch them for hours.
A couple of shots. No 2 shows the adults semi -webbed feet a bit!
Just a quick introduction from North Wales. I have only owned a DSLR for a couple of months and am busy learning what all the buttons do! Having fun with the control it offers and drooling over lenses that lie way off in the future for now. Plenty of cheaper toy accessories to get through before I can justify upgrading.
Not such a tight crop but its a lot cleaner than my last KF thread.
Over the 3 days I visited Rye Meads I must now have more shots of this post than I do of the wife

When I tried using my 30D yesterday I discovered a problem I've not seen before, and am concerned something is not working properly.

(It is also quite possible I'm completely missing something though and there's nothing wrong with the camera at all, just me!)

I normally shoot in AV or TV mode.
My understanding is that when I move the dial to set a shutter speed, say for example 1/60, it automatically sets the correct aperture, and the little indicator line on the exposure scale (from -2 to +2) points to zero in the middle.

When I try this now, the indicator line stays fixed at the marker before -1 (-1.3?). And if I then set a desired shutter speed (say 1/60), the resulting exposure comes out dark. It doesn't seem to move from that spot, no matter what shutter speed or aperture I set.

It does move however in full manual mode. This is currently the only way I'm able to record an accurate exposure.

Any thoughts?

[B]SOUTHERN AT WAR-Bluebell Railway weekend
Popped down to the Bluebell on Sunday for the annual Southern at war w/e armed with the 24-105. My remit (to myself) was to try and just get portraits, which I had never done before, so Im just putting a few up here, but the rest can be seen on my Flickr site. All the actors and participants were just fantastic, all decked out in 40's garb, and no one minded their pic. being taken, though I did ask. The sun was in and out which made for tricky conditions, and all those peaked caps didnt help. Im pleased generally with the results, and hope you like them too. As usual comments and crit very welcome.
A simple thing like a screw coller would have prevented this.
Can anyone recommend an alternative to Jobo, the escapee was my first and last from that company..
