Having been impressed by some of the ND images posted here I thought I'd like to take some myself - a desire that lasted right up until I saw the price of the filters.
Then I read something about using the glass from a welding mask but before I could get around to buying one the bottom drawer of my desk fell out! Stick with me here, this does have some relevance because what ended up strewn across my office floor was a whole lot of photographic stuff I'd quite forgotten about - including a solar filter I bought at the time of the total eclipse (and proved excellent at taking pictures of clouds).
So, moving on 14 years, is it feasible to use a solar filter as a ND filter and, if so, how many stops should I allow?
