    Challenge 113 - National Characteristics

My first thought for coming up with a theme was 'Burns Night', but then felt a bit hypocritical because I do sometimes quietly grumble about people that take on other peoples' National celebrations as their own just as an excuse (usually) to get drunk. And I am not remotely Scottish. But this did lead me to the theme of 'National Characteristics'. So, by all accounts, do a Burns Night picture, but equally anything else that represents a particular country (not necessarily your own). So, perhaps towels on a sun lounger, perhaps a string of onions and a beret, or some tinnies and a barbie. Please feature any stereotypes you can think of (I guess without being offensive), or it could be an iconic building or landscape. Let your imaginations run riot.

The competition running period starts now and ends at midnight (GMT) on Wednesday 10 February so this also includes (according to my diary at least) Australia Day, Groundhog Day, Waitangi Day, Chinese New Year and Pancake Day.

    Usual Challenge rules will apply:
    • The competition subject shall be selected by the winner of the preceding competition who will also judge the competition.
    • One picture per person; images should conform to general image posting rules.
    • Please use a Canon DSLR.
    • Posted images should be taken during the running period of the competition. Any images submitted that were taken before the competition started, or after the competition has ended, will be deemed invalid.
    • Images 800 pixels widest max (to help those with small monitors).
    • No Photoshop frames and borders.
    • Include a title; the image must convey the theme without title description.
    • Please, no comments, on images until the round is over.
    • No canvassing e.g. “I’m thinking of posting this image for the challenge, what do you think?”
    • I will pick 1st, 2nd and 3rd favourite images (please don’t PM me to discuss my choices).

For my part I will give genuine and constructive comments on all submitted entries.

Oh dear, still nothing. Could this be the first ever Challenge with no entries? Or are there actually hundreds of you poised out there just about to submit your image?
This is the last weekend, remember, you have until Wednesday, or I'll have the ignominy of being officially the world's worst Challenge setter.

I think the challenge has been "hidden" amonst all the Showcase threads and posts - perhaps that could be a separate section?
Still hope to get something in for this challenge....
        Cheers, Chris.

Re: Challenge 113 - National Characteristics

I'd be happy if it were extended for a couple more weeks ......I'm away from home and cannot tweak photos very much on my little travelling laptop.
I'm sure the main reason for lack of entries is beacause the title got buried under the EOYS.
The challenge title is a fine one, Alex!

Re: Challenge 113 - National Characteristics

Ok, so with no entries yet and only 3 days to go I think I had best extend it, to midnight on Wednesday 24 February. Hope that gives people a bit more time. I won't change the theme because I'm convinced it has a good bit of scope. So, along with the regulars, I note there have been a few new members introducing themselves lately, what better way to join the forum than getting an entry in. Go on, it is just a bit of fun.

A gentle mid-week bump as a reminder that there is just over a week to go. Go on, I'm sure you all wined and dined your various partners/spouses last weekend so are in credit to get out and about with your cameras...

Re: Challenge 113 - National Characteristics

Characteristics of two nations - China and Wales.

China - energetic celebrators of the Chinese New Year.
                    Wales - devoted rugby fans.

Seen at the Chinese New Year celebration a couple of weeks ago in Swansea, South Wales.

China represented by the Chinese Acrobatic Dancer and Wales represented by the Mayor of Swansea. This shot was taken just as the Six Nations rugby match between Wales and Ireland was starting in Dublin - the Chinese lady was putting everything into her dance, the Mayor looked like he was wishing he was watching the rugby.....

                    Cheers, Chris.

OK then, two decent entries so far (thanks, Ian and Chris) so we do actually have a competition at last. Phew! But a quick reminder that this is your last weekend to get those entries in, let's have a late rush.
