          Re: kenko 1.4 HD tc

My TC arrived today. Very pleased to discover that it works perfectly (on my 70D)with both my Canon 60 mm and Tamron 90 mm macro lenses. These lenses with and without the TC give me a very good range of focal lengths, combined with close focus, an excellent range for macro which is likely to be my main focus in future.

With the Sigma 150 - 600 C, it worked perfectly this morning up to 400 mm, a/f was jittery at 500 mm, but got there, couldn't get a/f at 600 mm. The day has brightened up a lot now and a/f at 500 mm is now fine, it does work at 600 mm on a brightly lit object with reasonable contrast. I'm not surprised that it struggles at 600 mm with an effective aperture of f8, and focal length on the crop body equivalent (I think) to 1344 mm, it's remarkable that a/f is possible at all.

I already knew from some of Nat's photos here that it worked well with the 55 - 250 IS STM and I can confirm this. On a crop sensor, I believe the combination is equivalent to 560 mm at the long end, at a very low weight, and a viable alternative to carrying a heavy lens around all day, albeit with a relatively small maximum aperture. Should be a great choice for butterflies and dragonflies, for example.

Another great value independent product. We've never had it so good!

hmmm that is surprising ,as the 70d is NOT f8 body that you got it to work with the sigma at all is a achievement ,my lad couldn't get mine to work with his 7d2 but as i didn't conduct that test please don't take it as read that it won't ,it worked with his canon 100-400mm.mk2 on the 7d2 though but i was getting comments like it was over-exposing blah blah blah ,again i didn't get to see the results so taken with a large pinch of salt .
tested it with my 70-200mm.f4 and the cheapie tamron 28-105 and both work fine with it on the 1d3

              Re: kenko 1.4 HD tc

I had an e-mail from Tamron when I queried about the compatibility of the Kenko with their SP 70-300mm, that the Kenko was about the best TC at the moment!!!!!! & that there was no compatibility issues with the Tamron lens. So this is Tamron praising Kenko HD 1.4x.

I might add that the Sigma 150-600mm lens is not on the compatibility chart issued by Kenko and still it works fine married to it; but I wonder whether the Sigma + Kenko is compatible with the 7d2. This is one of the main reasons that I thoroughly checked out the compatibility of my camera & lenses with the Kenko HD 1.4x before I bought the TC.

                Re: kenko 1.4 HD tc

Either it's something to do with the electronics in the t.c,s or the possibility that the latest canons have some sort of software built in that stops you using certain items with them ,I.e with the sigma on the 7d2 wouldn't even switch on ,no problems with other lenses though .might be because the rig registers at f9 ,though there's no problem with the older 1d3 .
At the end of the day I bought mine because it does what I need for a good price with my gear ,so it's worth possibly checking before buying or if peeps post there combos on here at least it will form some sort of database

                  Re: kenko 1.4 HD tc

I find from the compatibility chart, that the Kenko TC is compatible with the Canon 7dmk2 & also with the Canon 100-400mmmk2 & so these work fine. However the Sigma is not on the compatibility database with the Kenko TC. So this is the Jonah here- the Sigma; although I know that it works fine with the 1diii & Sigma. Therefore what I would say is that one should check the compatitbility of the Camera and lens with the Kenko chart before buying the TC.

                    Re: kenko 1.4 HD tc

As far as I can see, the compatibility chart only lists actual Canon lenses, which makes it somewhat limited. It also says "All other lenses that are not listed here are not compatible, cannot be used or are not tested yet". I think it's the last point that is most important since third party lenses obviously aren't tested. There are actually very few lenses that are listed as not compatible with the HD TC compared to the other TC models. I suspect it will work with the vast majority.

I hope you are right Richard but I know even Canon has a list of it's own lenses that are compatible with it's TC's. I am not experienced enough to experiment with such items and prefer to go by the "book". So far I have not been disappointed. I might add that the Kenko chart also has got Nikon lenses that work with it's TC.

                        Re: kenko 1.4 HD tc

Well, it works with my Sigma and Tamron lenses which is what matters to me. It also works with my older 450D body, which is not on their list of compatible bodies.

There's a leaflet in the box which states that the TC will only work with genuine Canon and Tokina lenses. This is obviously not correct, but I suspect that they are just covering themselves against complaints. We can't really expect them to test every single lens available.

It does say that it's not compatible with the 50 mm F1.8. I tested it with mine and that's correct, it doesn't autofocus. Not that I'd want to use it with that lens anyway.
