Thanks again...Ill keep reading up on this....maybe 400 is enough, its hard to know until I try it. Calumet do a try before you buy so when I'm down to choosing between two lens I might do that.

you could always get the 100-400 mk ii with a 1.4 x that will give you 560mm and on the mk ii its very sharp, the recent horse photo I took with that combination and your camera - least this way you keep the weight down and have 1.4 in the bag

That's a good suggestion if you only occasionally need the extra reach, although fully open you'll be working at f8 with that combination

Ah but with the sigma sport and 1.4 tc I get 840 mm albeit at f9

yep, but I can walk around all day with the 100-400 and wouldn't be paranoid about banging the lens as its not that big, with the 1.4 in your bag you have that reach should you want - I honesty don't think you would want to walk around all day with the sigma, its not that type of lens

                Will a Mk1 100-400 work with a 1.4 extender? I believe the 5DMKIII autofocus is good to f8.

Yes it will, if you've got the latest firmware update.

Thanks John....I might trade my 70-200 for a MKI......and an extender.

                        Re: 150-600, 100-400 or 400 prime?

now the cat is among the pigeons......just thought about the 70-300 f4-5.6L and 2XMKIII extender....would give me 600mm reach which is the maximum I want, and it would be smaller to carry.....so for my buy options are 100-400 + 1.4 extender (max 560mm) or 70-300 with 2x extender (max 600mm).
The 100-400 is the newer and slightly better performer in sharpness....but the 70-300 is a neater package.
                        Any thoughts?

considering your looking for reach I would go for the 100-400 as that will offer an extra 100 mm without any extenders, also its a much newer and quite possibly a sharper lens. Why buy a lens thats 5 yrs older, plus the 100-400 has Fluorite element that apparently makes it a lot sharper and focus even with the 1.4 is very quick, for me its a no brainer :)

Thanks Ian....you are right - looks like the extenders are not so good in image quality and might not work with the 70-300 anyway. So most likely now I'll order the 100-400 MkII...and use my wife's 60D with crop sensor for some extra reach if I need it

                            thanks for taking the time.

I'm pretty sure that Canon extenders don't fit the 70-300L. However, the Kenko ones do.

With a 2x converter on the 70-300 your max aperture would be f/11.0!
