    Re: Stan and Dee's year......

    Cheers Andy and Alex

It is probably just me, though, but I have absolutely no idea why one of those images is considered to work better as a projected image and the other in print.
two separate competitions and different images. My prints that were third were a cheetah and gannets and Dee's PDI that was third was a macro image

Thanks, yes I get they were different competitions, I suppose what I am interested in is what made you decide to put your diving bird image into the PDI competition rather than the print competition. Would it have done equally well in print (except that it was up against Dee's great image), or does something about it lend it to PDI more than print?

see what you mean Alex. It was just a question of timing. I entered it in a digital competition in November and once I had done that, I couldn't enter it again in any of the clubs competitions during the year, either digital or print whereas Dee had kept hers for entry in the print competition which was in January. The pelican was printed up at 16 x 12 for our exhibition earlier in the year and will be entered in a county competition at the end of July, along with Dee's but I suspect hers will edge it - she won the nature cup there last year, I got it the year before and I'm sure she will be looking to retain it

Thanks Stan. Not being a camera club member myself, their competitions are a mystery to me.

                  Cheers Alex.

I prefer print chomps as if once printed and it doesn't look quite right you have the chance to tweak and print again whereas with projected images, the shot may look fine on your computer screen but once projected at upwards of 6 feet wide any little blemishes are magnified and sometimes the colours are not what you expect as competition screens are finely calibrated

Or sometimes not. Things are better now but in the early days at club we did sometimes get green skies until we replaced the projector and got a calibration system. Much better now but still not perfect. On the other hand unless the result is drastically different on screen the other members won't notice since they haven't seen it on your PC...

Anyhow congratulations to you both on a comprehensive performance.

What I was really getting at apart from colour etc is the sharpness of the shot, particularly with small creatures that often look pin sharp on the small screen and at a reasonable sized print but project them on a large screen and things can look very different
