    Burscough Wharf

Burscough Wharf on the Leeds to Liverpol canal.

Originally a British Waterways maintenance depot, this building fell into disrepair (and became something of a real eyesore) after the demise of commercial traffic on the canal.

In 2011 it was renovated into what you see here, complete with bar, restaurant, a diverse collection of shops, and function rooms available for hire. This is now a hub of social activity.

This year sees the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Leeds to Liverpool canal and the Burscough Heritage Society will be hosting celebrations on the weekend of 18th & 19th June.

Photographed just before dusk (golden hour) in mixed lighting.

I like that well done - can't make my mind up about the barge on the right and if that shouldn't be cropped out

I'm with Ian, think that the barge should go as it blocks the view further down the shot. Aside from that, nice image with a wonderful reflection

nice reflections but with the barge, don't think half really works, should be all or nothing

Sorry but, after cropping by sliding the iamge off the screen, I'm another who feels that half a narrowboat lets it down but otherwise it's a good shot with lovely light and reflections I'm a big fan of repurposing redundant industrial buildings and this development is a good example.

            Cheers,
            John

As much as anything else I continue to enjoy this forum because it allows me to look, listen and learn.

It never occured to me to crop the boat on the right, but what a difference it makes! And the square format takes me back to my old medium format days - hey ho!

Many thanks to you all for your constructive observations.

Better without the barge, really lovely shot.

                    Re: Burscough Wharf

I'm going to have to swim against the flow here (even though canals don't flow) by preferring the original. In the first the barge and the tree provide a solid visual stop on the right side of the image that keeps the attention within the frame. In the cropped version the picture peters out into a rather dull distance. It also now lacks a sense of width and feels artificially square and cramped.

Lovely image, Steve, great clarity and cracking reflections in the still water. But I'm going to swim with Nigel here - the half barge works for me, for exactly the reasons Nigel describes.

They both look good, but seeing it is a canal the first one gives it that canal feeling, and gives it a bit of character to the photo

                          Re: Burscough Wharf

To be totally honest, there's a tad more of the boat on the right than is show in my original posting.

I intentionally cropped it right down the middle of the boat - trying to be a bit arty!

                          Steve.
