Why should i upgrade to the 7D2

So i currently have the Cannon 500D which I bought in March 2011. I love my little Beginners camera, but i realized after attending a few airshows recently that my FPS is too slow, only 3 FPS. And so after reading in the EOS mag that the 7D2 is a whopping 10 FPS i thought that would be a nice camera to have.

However should i buy a more expensive camera for just one specification. What is in the 7D2 that makes it great, why not just put that money into a really good L series lens.

Why should i upgrade to the 7D2? and i don't just mean the specs, what are the benefits of this camera over my current one? Yeah it sounds like a stupid question, but there it is.

Being a lot younger the 7D2 will clearly be the better camera but at a price. The spec of the Mk 2 is much higher than the model it replaces but, if you don't need to shoot in low light / high ISO then it may be that a Mk1 (which is available at around £350 used) would give you what you want but for far less money yet still shoot at 8fps.

The main downside is you'd need to change your username

    Cheers,

The focussing ability of either 7D is likely to be much better than the 500D. The 7D was developed as an action camera for enthusiasts/semi-pro use, so build and user interface will be better on top of focussing ability.

The 80D is another option ,although not as fast as the 7D2. It's a slightly better all rounder imho .but each to there own either of the 7d models or the 80d will give fast a.f with the right lenses ,check out my b.i.f shots in the nature section

agree so long as your not pushing the ISO then 7DMki is a good option and a lot cheaper

Ok cool, thx everyone, gives me a few things to think about. Is there any good comparison chart I can look at that shows all the specs of the Canon cameras?

Mark ,there are lots of online reviews on most camera models and you will do well to read these reviews as well as get the advice of members. I recently bought my 760D after reading all available reviews as there were not many members owning this model. In the end I am really delighted with my purchase as it is as good as the 70D with a few good features from the 80D as well. So, do read the reviews as well.
              Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!

There is another way of looking at it to ,if you want to keep the costs down ,find yourself a used 1D3 ,you will have 10fps ,lightning fast a/f ,super picture quality ,and higher useable iso values .
I can assure you it's hard to go back to 1.6 crop sensors after using these beasts with there slightly larger 1.3 sensors

TBH, most reviews put the 7DII well ahead of the 1DIII (newer tech over older tech), and almost as good as a 1DIV. You certainly wont go wrong with a 7DII, it's a great all round performer.

I'd also say consider the 80D, BTW watch (well listen to) this for burst rates...

If you go to the Canon USA site they still offer the option of comparing models - just click the compare box of two or more models (max 4) and then press the compare button that appears. The UK site seems to have abandoned this useful feature sadly...

I use and own a 80D it was my choice and I,m pleased with it ,I,m in a lucky position as all four household members shoot wildlife so I can base my choices on practical usage, handling ,image quality ,and most importantly how the files process once shot ,that's often forgotten .also how each camera and lens combo works together .
The available list goes like this
                            80D X1
                            7D X1
                            400D X1
                            7D mkii x2
                            5D x 1
                            Eos m3 x 1
                            LENSES
                            Sigma 150-600 s
                            500mm L mkii
                            70-200
                            100mm macro
                            2x 100-400mkii
                            400m f5.6 L
Plus lots of wide angles and odd and Sod's ,so as can be seen I have more than enough variety in house to appraise results from, that's without taking into account compacts ,and two go.pro set ups ,tele converters ,tripods ,monopods ,bean bags etc etc etc
