    Some 'arty' images

I was round at a friend's house last week and they asked me if I would like to contribute some 'arty mono' images to a collage that they were making up of their house and garden. They live in a beautiful house so this should have been easy, but one of my struggles is that I really love to see artistic shots of architectural detail, but whenever I try it, it just looks a bit rubbish. But anyway, I came up with a few images and tried to process them a bit differently. These were my favourite four. All converted in Nik Silver Efex. Grateful for any thoughts and comments.

    Re: Some 'arty' images

First one is great, second one lose the light bit at the top right a window maybe ?
The garden gates is good but if you lose the gate pillar at the left side I think it looks better. The last one made me smile, I have a very similar image taken in New Zealand at the back of a pizza restaurant, mind you mine is in colour [emoji15]
I think your friends will be pleased with all four of those Alex, well done.

The first one is a cracker. The second will be when you crop the light off the top. The third and fourth are 'ok'

      Overall a great set

      Cheers,

          Re: Some 'arty' images

That's a good set, I think you nailed the compositions.
The second one just needs a bit of the top cropped to remove the distracting light.
The third maybe a slight crop on the left to refine the post.
But those small comments aside I think it's a set your friends will be happy with.

            Re: Some 'arty' images

Peter, John, Tom, Andy, thanks for taking the time to stop by and give your thoughts. My first instinct when processing no 2 was to crop the window as you have all suggested. So why didn't I? At the time I thought leaving it in gave a more 'dynamic' image (albeit of a sleeping dog) and there was value in showing the light source to tie the subject into its environment, partly because the radiator was recognisable as such. If the radiator had been obscured, then the image becomes more abstract, in which case it would be better to remove the window. Hmmm, I think I overthought it and should have just gone with my gut and cropped....

I'm with the others here- top marks for nos 1 and 2- with the added bonus of it being very personal to the owners, with their dogs integral to the image

Don't understand all that dynamic waffle, Alex! Go with first instinct- crop that window!

                    Re: Some 'arty' images

Nice work, one and two work very well. Agree that the second needs a crop. Lose a bit of the top too and then a slight crop on the right to the pointed edge of the bed and clone out couple of light patches that will be left. Then tone down background so radiator is no longer visible.

Oh get you Alex, all arty

As others have said the first it outstanding, closely followed by the second. The others dont compare but then you've set a very high bar

1's the best for me, interesting pov. The dog is definitely better cropped without the light distracting. I quite like the texture in 4 too but 3 doesn't really do or say anything but I guess if it's their gate...

Great set...I know where you are coming from in No2 in leaving the window in but just scrolling the image upwards on my iPad to lose the window immediately strengthens the image...also the last one looks a bit ordinary compared with the others.....maybe a bit more contrast and dark vignette on that one?
                              Love the first one!
