If they kept the exchange rate fair , it would work out at just over £4500 in the UK , which is much more tempting and realistic . Do we really have to pay £1500 more in taxes ?

VAT is 20%, so for a £6,000 lens £1500 extra is correct. People in USA will pay whatever their local rate is extra.
Of course, these are aimed mainly at professionals who will be VAT registered which in effect means they will pay 20% less. They will also put it into their capital pool and write down the value over time, which will save on tax also. The overall cost to a pro is much less than an amateur.

My total bodies and lenses cost not much more than half of the price of this lens, but I'm very happy with all of them and I can take a remarkable range of photos (when I get time!!) with them, from very wide angle to 600 mm (actually equivalent to 960 mm on the crop bodies) and to 5 times life size macro (actually 8 x, on the crop bodies again). Enough to keep me occupied for the rest of my life. Fortunately I don't suffer from the "mine's bigger than yours" syndrome a.k.a. lens envy. More expensive equipment will never of itself make a better photographer.
          EOS 6D, 6D Mk II, 80D, 70D, 100D, 200D, M50, M100. Canon 10-18, 18 - 55, 55 - 250 IS STM lenses, Canon 16 - 35 mm F4L, 35 mm EF-S macro, 50 mm F1.8 STM, 60 mm EF-S macro, MPE-65 macro, 85 mm F1.8, 200 mm F2.8 L II, M 15 - 45 mm, M 22mm F2, M 32mm F1.4. Sigma 24 - 35 F2 Art, 135 mm F1.8 Art, 17 - 50 F2.8 DC, 105 mm OS macro, 100 - 400 C, 150 - 600 C.
