    Jardin du Palais Royale

    Bifurcated by light:

    It just caught my attention!

I do like this- well spotted and definitely worth a picture, that vertical streak of light is indeed arresting.

A slight concern is the paleness of the paths on either side- worth a tiny tiny nudge to the dark side somewhere in LR?

Thanks for commenting - I know what you mean, this was an HDR and I might go back to the originals, but there are always going to be light paths either side... So I also tried it vertically (because I knew this would be a problem), but I don't like it quite so much:

Compromises! Any suggestions as to how I can improve the first one, gratefully received!

Yes I also saw the portrait version on flickr but agree the landscape shot has more about it

I was thinking of just nudging the exposure to the left a bit and increasing contrast- had a little play on this in my LR and it seemed better. That would be my suggestion

Serge ?Ramelli who does all the LR videos on You Tube who is himself from Paris would no doubt get out his graduated tool and work those diagonal paths but I don't have his skills and would end up darkening too much else such as heads and part of tree trunks.

          Another go...

Version 2: Bifurcated by Light by Richard Anderson, on Flickr

I tried some more fancy stuff, but I am not good enough with LR or PS to master this!!!

I think you are somewhere between the two Richard. I'd go for a slight vignette and adjust the feather till it just drops the exposure where you want it to be

Hmmmm sorry Richard I cant see any difference, unless it's really subtle?

Well spotted and captured Richard. I quite like the portrait view too, seems to have a greater sense of perspective.

                            Re: Jardin du Palais Royale

I like the original best, it has a light airy feel that says Paris in fine weather. Do agree that the edges need a little attentions as they are a bit too light.
Here I added a duplicate layer, set to Multiply and reduced the opacity to taste (in this case 50%) and then used an opaques mask and brush to remove the mask where I wanted the bottom to show through - best done with the brush at a lower opacity than normal - 35-40% is good.
