Re: 24-70 or new 24-105?
I also still love my 24-105 mkI its still my go to lens for team and individual player portrait shots.
Like tigger if i do change this lens I will probably go for the 24-70 f2.8 next.
but its only one stop faster.
So if your shooting at f4 and shutter is 1000'second f3.5 becomes 1250'sec f3.2 becomes 1600'sec f2.8 becomes 2000'sec,so becoming x3 faster hope this makes sense!starting to confuse myself now lol.

Re: 24-70 or new 24-105?
Apart from the extra stop and the possibility of having the BG OOF I seem to recall that (depending on body, camera that is) the centre AF spot offers higher degree of accuracy with f2.8 lens.
Probably not a major consideration the short focal lengths.Canon 5D3, 7D2, 60D, Canon 70-200L f2.8 IS II, Canon 300 f4L IS, Canon 16-35 f4 L, Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, Canon 1.4 MkIII extender, Sigma AF 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM, Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, Tamron SP AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC USD, Canon EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS

Re: 24-70 or new 24-105?
It might depend on your camera, but on a 5Dsr...
24-70 f2.8 II is a Group A lens (the lower the letter the better the AF options available)
24-70 f4 is Group C
24-105 f4 is Group C
So basically the f2.8-ness of the f2.8 lens is what makes the difference (Canon having AF points that work better with f2.8 or faster lenses).
Basically you don't get the dual-cross AF points with type C (needs B or above, A has more of them)
