    Re: New lighting section ?

I'm looking at getting a Better Beamer and seeing how that works. A friend has also asked if I can do some shots of his car so that would be an excellent time to have a play with OCF using some of the Oxfordshire country side.

      That would be very interesting.

Car shots are harder with flash because of the reflection

Glenn, I never knew those things had a lens at the front - I though it was just a vriation of a snoot.

I Was hoping you'd come on board Brian.

I can get by OK with a hotshoe mounted flash there seems to be some differences with you take it off camera - lots of things aren't falling into place for me right now -
I'm Hoping to get a real handle on things. I know some of the basics and can get some half decent results.
I'm OK with balancing ambient with OCF flash outdoors and indoors - no real useful success with OCFes as the sole light.

I was a gopher in a studio in the south east, I might have picked up a couple of things while bringing cups of tea to the clients.

          Re: New lighting section ?

Trevor under what circumstances were you using flash as the main light? The aperture controls flash power and shutter speed controls ambient. ISO will increase/decrease both to get the exposure you want/need.

Jim anywhere were 1/250 cuts out all or nearly all the ambient.
Then I'm into more power, bad pics, slower recycles, then I give up in a bad temper :-)

              Re: New lighting section ?

I should be able to cut out all the ambient if I want ?

There's a mental block somewhere. I can't apply the theory, or my haste to get up and running, doing things fast and getting consistant results I am missing something vital.

Can you post an example and exif and describe what you were looking for?
At smaller apertures yes the flash has to output more power and at full power something like a 580 will take around 5 seconds to recycle (shorter recycle times can be achieved using battery packs).

                  Re: New lighting section ?

Just a small note to the "Powers that Be". I know you have posted elsewhere in the "WHY?" thread about stickies, that this request is up for consideration. I just wanted to say that I do feel this thread shows the need for this dedicated section. There are so many aspects to this I do feel it deserves a section so we can post and ask all about these things from those of the forum who clearly are in the know.

                    Re: New lighting section ?

                    Robert did mention a sub-section.

Perhaps under Specialist Subjects would be appropriate?

                      Re: New lighting section ?

I'd also like to see a dedicated section to lighting - especially studio lighting....I've checked several you-tube videos and they all assume I know something that I don't.
i.e. I understand what a soft box is, but what is the light source, is it on all the time or does it just flash when the camera takes the shot.
What would be a basic first set up? having seen some videos I'm likely to start some Heath Robinson experiments with outdoor security lights, Brian Squibb's soft box design and a tablecloth....because I don't understand all the jiggery pokery of what to buy as a proper system. So please help before I either electrocute myself, blind someone or set the house on fire.

Done. New lighting forum is in the EOS photography section. Feedback welcome.

Thanks Robert - I shall follow this section as Lighting is one aspect I've never got to grips with.
