Re: Mass Consultation on forum challenge rules

    Hi there All

The rules seem ok to me as they are, the time frame is a pain, but it should force us to take fresh pictures. some of the themes are restrictive and maybe more technique based themes would garner more entries, but leave it as it is, it's fine and it will grow.

For the avoidance of any doubt and to help any new members that may not be aware of the background to the "Fun" competition, perhaps the winner of the previous competition, when setting the theme for the new competition, would copy and paste the rules at the same time.

I agree that the time frame is a pain but if someone cannot meet this deadline it is not the end of the world as the next competition is only 2 weeks ahead. IMO the time frame is essential so that entrants, particularly new comers get used to working to a strict time schedue. Who knows from such a fun competition, there might emerge another Colin C or a David Bailey, or a Millie or Les Maclean ................etc.

          I have a good idea -

          1. The founding rules can be open to interpretation - or-
          2. Write to the 'Plain English Movement' (just to get 'rules' in plain English) - or -
          3. Why bother with rules, as nobody reads them anyway. This would then leave the challenge open to anybody, as they won't be constricted by 'rules'.

(PS - I would then be able to use some 'old' photos taken abroad - living in a Land lock city, a beach is just a just a minor problem!)

Re: Mass Consultation on forum challenge rules

We all shoot good pictures, generally of subjects we prefer, at a time of our choosing. Pro's are generally given their subject and have to come up with the results in hours, or within 24 hrs. So the concept of this lighthearted competition was, in a very limited way, to take us out of our normal comfort zone and come up with a shot. Because it was just for fun, we would get a couple of weeks to complete the "assignment" and stay within a few simple rules:
            • One shot - because you should be capable of picking out your best work and one of us has to judge all the entries and it's not much fun if you have to spend hours on the judging.
            • No borders, because the shot should stand on it's own merit.
            • Manipulation not banned, because nobody knows where to draw the line for what would be and wouldn't be classed as manipulation/post processing. But be aware that if it's obvious, or badly done you will probably be "beaten with sticks".
            • No comments suporting the work, as it needs to stand on it's own merit. If you need to comment on, or sell the concept behind the shot .............. it hasn't worked!
            • No comments by other members until after the judging. It is tedious having to wade through multiple posts hoping to find the odd entry. For the benefit of all of us and especially the judge, it should be entry, entry, entry etc, judges remarks and then if you wish, congratulate the winners.

For those of you that may feel they are exlcuded by any of the competitions because of the subject matter, the subjects are set without reference to anyone's location and you may have to think out of the box to get a realistic entry. On the current assignment, a beach is not just the seaside - it could be any stretch of water that has a tidal effect and therefore an area between the high and low water which is a beach. That could be the sea, river, lake, creek etc. Or you could do as I did and do a 100 mile round trip and get to a beach.

At the end of the day it's just a bit of fun and it doesn't really matter whether you win or not. On further thought, it's probably best to come second, because first has to set the next theme, judge all the entries and take a lot of stick along the way.
