Challenge no. 189- Spots and Stripes

Challenge number 189 Spots and Stripes

I’m looking for an image that has as its subject a strong presence of spots or stripes – or both together if you want

This can be as already made eg ladybird, tiger, an article of clothing or as discovered while out and about- such as the stripes made by a plough in a field

As ever I am open to a flexible interpretation.

In particular I encourage newcomers to the forum, or the shy ones who have not yet posted, to have a go. It’s just for fun and I will give friendly and constructive comments, bearing in mind my strictly amateur status.

The prize is the honour of standing on our virtual podium

Judging will be based on the following:-

    * fulfilling the brief
    * a good photo based on composition, focus and exposure..
    * Having impact. Will I remember your image after I go away from the computer?

    The usual rules apply:

    • The competition subject shall be selected by the winner of the preceding competition who will also judge the competition.
    • One picture per person; images should conform to general image posting rules.
    • Please use a Canon EOS camera i.e. SLR / DSLR / M & R series
    • Posted images should be taken during the running period of the competition. Any images submitted that were taken before the competition started, or after the competition has ended, will be deemed invalid.
    • Images 800 pixels widest max (to help those with small monitors).
    • No Photoshop frames and borders.
    • Include a title; the image must convey the theme without title description.
    • Please, NO comments on images- on this or another thread- until the round is over.
    • No canvassing e.g. “I’m thinking of posting this image for the challenge, what do you think?”
    • I will pick 1st, 2nd and 3rd favourite images (please don’t PM me to discuss my choices).

Closing date for entries is midnight Sunday 25th September.

This should be enough time to get your thinking caps on, take your masterpiece and then finalise it in PP

Have a go..... why not ?

So far only only one entry which is a disappointing response

However as the last couple of weeks have been somewhat on hold due to the Queen's demise, I propose to extend the closing date by 2 weeks

NEW CLOSING DATE :- midnight Sunday 9th OCTOBER

Thanks to all of you who took part. I loved the variety of the entries but it didn't make my task easy !

                            My thoughts are as follows:-

                            Farider- Red and Green Spots
A real Wow image. Sharply focused, perfect symmetry, lots of curiosity as to how you achieved it. One question- is that green or blue ?!

                            EOSwinters -Cast Stripes
This fulfils the brief nicely but I’m not really sure what it is – rusty cast iron? In an effort to find out I blew it up on flickr to about 3 times the size and found this more interesting with all the lumps and bumps.

                            Lavenderhill -Spot the Eagle
I’ve looked at this a few times and still can’t work out what it. It’s rather fun but probably a bit too one- dimensional for me

                            ST-EOS- Architectural Lines
A lovely crisp mono with a keen eye for composition. Beautifully balanced contrast

Daisy M - Enchanted forest spots
Rather fun and a bit spooky. I always find wood shots are difficult to manage since you need a lead in and a line for your eye to follow- and that is what is missing for me here

                            Stackman- Bridge of Stripes
Well spotted ! Lots of detail, well composed. Would something at the end of the bridge have helped elevate the image to being a bit more memorable?

                            Springfield Photo- Back Stripes
A lovely lady in a sultry pose, an arresting image. If I may offer a comment it would be that her face, her hair and her hands are all worthy of more attention than you’ve given them – should you lighten the shadows a bit? It would make for less contrast with the back stripes but would do her the justice she deserves

To find my winners I went with what really stayed with me and so here we have it

                            3rd Place - Peter - Architectural Lines

2nd Place – Alan -Back Stripes

                            Drum Roll for ...........

1st Place Ian - Red and Green Spots

                            Congratulations !
