    Illuminated train pics

Next weekend I’ll be going on one of the illuminated train rides. If any one has already been on one and can offer any tips on what worked best for taking pics it would be much appreciated. I’ll be using the EOSR and was considering taking a 35mm and a100mm as they both do wide aperture which I assume I’ll need. Or will the 24-240 cope? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Ian, chalk and cheese I know. I use a 35mil f2 for a lot of the military stuff I do. All too often at dusk, night (by available light, torch, fire, flare etc.) and dawn with good results.

      Ian,

I have not had the chance to cover the illuminated trains, but I have gone to the Carnival at Weston-super-Mare a couple of times - not too different, although there may be more lights at the Carnival than on a train.

On the last occasion I used the EF 16-35 f4 L and used manual mode with the aperture set at it's widest (f4), the exposure time at 1/125th and ISO on auto. The ISO varied from a couple of hundred to 1600. Almost all the images were usable (albeit with a bit of fettling in LR in some cases).

I figured that as the carts (floats) were moving (and have many rotating features on them), I could not rely on panning and needed a reasonably short exposure. With trains, you will probably be photographing them at rest and may well be able to tolerate a longer exposure which should allow you to keep your ISO lower.

      Hope this helps.

I don't know much about illuminated trains, but assume it will be steam and you'll be on a platform or track side. If that's the case I wouldn't want to start changing lenses, especially if it's windy, not unless you have some means of doing it undercover.
