    A Victorian Curiosity.

The Iron Aqueduct on the Grand Union Canal, Cosgrove, Northamptonshire. by Ian Wheatley, on FlickrThe Iron Aqueduct, GUC Cosgrove, Northamptonshire. by Ian Wheatley, on Flickr

As you can probably all guess from recent posts I have a fascination with canals and have had since I was a boy. This shows the Iron Aqueduct on the GUC at Cosgrove, one of only three in the country I believe. Opened in 1811 to replace the previous brick built one which collapsed not long after construction. Its a testament to the skill and ingenuity of the Victorians that, 190 years later, its still carrying traffic, albeit nowadays just leisure craft, over the River Ouse below. Regards, Ian W.

Good to see Ian, I hadn’t heard of it; its quite an impressive structure. The victorians did build things to last!
