Just a trio of images of the journey by CalMac Ferry from the mainland to the Outer Hebrides.
#1 Departing Ullapool on a bit of a dull overcast day, that became a wet and windy day crossing of the Minch.
#2 The property on the left is where we stayed before heading for Harris and Lewis. I recently posted an image taken from it looking towards Ullapool.
#3 Arriving at Stornoway, image taken through the observation Lounge glass, made worse due to the rain, I thought I had a serious case sensor dust issue when I first looked at this image on my PC .
The Castle is Lews Castle.
A little bit of a back story/history about the building and its owners. It was built between 1844-51 as a country house for Sir James Matheson who had bought the whole of the Isle of Lewis with his fortune that was made from the Chinese Opium trade!. It was designed by a Glasgow Architect Charles Wilson. I believe that the Island was later sold to Lord Leverhulme (Of the Soap Dynasty, think Port Sunlight ) who also bought the Isle of Harris. At a later date Lord Leverhulme gifted the Building and grounds to the people of Stornoway, who created a Trust to manage it. I believe it is now a hotel/self catering apartments.
