    Off camera flash experiment

Two quick snaps to show an alternative to software generated HDR images using off cam flash.
Please forgive these pictures, there a practical applications such as:
interior shots were you want detail through a window, I could have lit the whole room with flashguns.
Or - when you have to snap someone standing in front of a backlit window

    Both same easy technique
Set cam to manual, meter for the sky - light subject wth flash, I used manual flash. With ettl wireless it is even easier.
Postion flash(s) so they're not reflected in the window.

    Indoor backlit subject against window

    outdoor backlit subject

    Any comment, questions, suggestions. :-)

What is "off cam flash"? You did not flash? Or ...?

Howdy Friso, I think maybe you have you been looking at the exif ?

I was using a radio trigger with manual flash, as far as the camera's computer is concerned there is no flash, thus not recorded in the exif

off cam flash - just means the flashgun is not on the camera hotshoe.

And what kind of advantage gives that?

It allows you to light your subject from a different direction from which you're taking the shot!

You can either use a remote trigger (no physical connection between camera and flash unit), or connect the flash to the camera with an off-shoe cord. Remote trigger allows you to trigger many flash guns at once, so lighting the subject from different directions.

Hope that helps. All the best, Mike.

What Mike says and numerous other applications, in fact too many to list.

Thanks for the comments on the pix Vdzande, I was just getting into my stride when my wife let the dog into the garden.
Photography was impossible after that. :-)

I'm just kinda starting out with this, I've set myself a target to be producing very nice work by the end of September.
Will post shots (good and bad) of my endavours and different applications of off camera flash photography as I progress, I hope others will do the same.

Was doing some shots at sunset when I decided to try the 7D wireless flash controller gizmo.

Here is an interestingly lit snap (imho) of one of my photography amigos.

Camera in manual, metered for the sky. F5.6 1/50 ISO 100
Usd ettl flash metering for the guy's face, 580 ex flash gun hand held by me, lowish angle cam left.

Flash does a lot more than that.

I would suggest that you read the numerous books on flash, right from the basic single off camera and the two flash scenarios up to multiple studio type flash. Then there are the speedlights, studio flash and constant lights. Then think about the light modifiers, such as umbrellas, softboxes, snoots, barn doors and so on.

                              Then consider the permutations.....

Flash is a VERY big subject and the forum is not the appropriate place to write a tutorial
