Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX ii over exposes with 90D

I’m planning to see the orchids at Kew, and thought I’d better practice using the flash on my new 90D. It worked fine on my 80D.

It is drastically over exposing. I have to set the flash on -3 Exposure and the camera to under expose on -2/3.

I usually work in Av mode, either F5.6 or F8. Very rarely do I go any higher. The ISO is usually on Auto, but even set at ISO200 it still over exposes. Even in P mode it is still over exposing.

I have changed the Camera settings:
    • E-TTL II meter to Average
    • Slow synchro to 1/250-1/60sec. Auto

I’m beginning to wish I kept the first macro Ring Light, never had a problem with it.

    Can anyone solve my problem?

    Hi Jan,
It could be the flash sync speed in AV. Have you tried it on Auto? does the same happen in manual mode?

      Thanks for replying.
This early evening I emailed the magazine with my query and got a very quick response from Nina. For some reason the camera Flash Control E-TTL II meter setting was on Average. She suggested it should be set on Evaluative. I immediately noticed an improvement. It was getting dark by this time, but there was definitely an improvement. Tomorrow I will find time to play!
This weekend my usual Valentines Day present is a bouquet of odd but photogenic flowers, so will get plenty of practice in!
