    Cartegena

I have been looking back at the photos from one of our 2014 trips to Spain. We visited Cartagena, a lovely place, which has a superb Roman amphitheatre. The day was extremely bright and although this shot does not show much of the amphitheatre, I liked the contrast between the cool shadow of the tunnel and the almost overwhelming light beyond it.

(Ian, please note - no doors needed to be opened!)

I like it too...it even has a centrally positioned perfect little white cloud against the blue sky......a little bit more of the tunnel at the top would have been nice as the sky is almost breaking through its stoney frame...but otherwise perfect

                      Re: Cartegena

With all the HDR we've been seeing lately it does, by comparison, lack something in the framing's detail as well as being a little bit tight at the top but the perfect placement of that cloud is enough for me to forgive all of that. Very nice

                      Cheers,
                      John

Actually - it isn't HDR - I fettled a single shot which had the tunnel dark and the daylight portion too bright. Apart from the usual lens corrections, sharpening and noise reduction, I lifted shadows (+67), reduced highlights (-50) and painted over the bright area with an exposure adjustment brush (-0.6).

John - I have just realised that I have misinterpreted your comments - mea culpa - you were making the point that compared to an HDR image it lacked something in the darker areas. This is true - below is a similar HDR image- but I feel that this has too even an exposure. The original non-HDR version wins in my view purely because there is greater tension between the dimness of the tunnel and the brightness of the outside world.
