Took myself out on another excursion into the depths of Dartmoor early this morning. This time to Childe's Tomb which is on the south eastern fringe of the notorious Foxtor Mires - perhaps Dartmoor's most treacherous mire. Foxtor Mires is what inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, Grimpen Mire in the 'Hound of the Baskervilles'.
There are some lovely legends and stories surrounding Foxtor Mires, some I'm sure are true. My favourite is of the young man making his way home many years ago, when he spotted a bowler hat out in the middle of the Mire. Making his way out to retrieve the hat, he found it to be on a head - the head of a Gent who had been out riding and was up to his neck in the mire. Trying to dislodge the man without any success he asked where his horse was to which the gent replied - 'I'm sitting on the Bl...dy thing'
