    "My First Movie"

Hi all, my first post of these forums, hope I've got the etiquette right!
The article in the latest edition of EOS Magazine reminded me that in the summer, after a year of having owned my 7D, I remembered that it had a movie mode! So, bolting on a Tamron 90mm Macro & grabbing the tripod, I went out to the garden to see what I could find. In many ways this was like those first faltering steps with stills: got a camera, now to go find something to take photos of, or to film in this case. This short film is the result: you can tell it's my first because of the lack of smoothness in focus pulling and in panning, but I've got to start somewhere! What do you think?

Hi Moushu, just gone from the introduction threads to your movie, really good for a "first" quite suprised by the quality, love your soundtrack really suits the images.

I've had my 5D2 for over 2 years and to date I've never used the video mode.
Really good quality - loved the sleeping dog
After seeing this I really must give it a go sometime.
      Thanks for sharing

I think the movie mode has a lot of promise: particularly like the ability to control exposure and depth of field. But you have to be aware of the limitations, not least the lack of autofocus. Something that a compact at a tenth of the price can manage of course. But as long as you bear that in mind, I think there's great potential. Come on guys, give it a go ;)

A very nice first attempt. Imagine what a bit of practise will do! I had the same feeling when I got the 500D. It was like going back to the beginning. The excitement and frustration of stepping out of your comfort zone.

And the key is, just do it. Go out and shoot. I could have done so much more, but my big ideas got in the way. I didn't have the time or budget to make the movie I saw in my head. So, it's very liberating to let go and keep it simple. Experiment with what you have and see where it takes you.

Exactly. EOS cameras don't have autofocus and they lack some features that dedicated video cameras have, but they more than make up for it in image quality. And nothing beats having both in the same device, especially when you're on holiday. Video cameras shoot still as well, but those are hardly worth using.

I have a big fat HD camera, but it gets little more use than my film SLRs. And I paid a whole lot more for it. The 60D is my video camera of choice, unless I'm filming a concert or a lecture.

Looks great, hope you don't mind me asking, what software did youuse to edit the film?

                    Hey Ian, no problem.
I used nothing more complicated or "advanced" than iMovie, that comes as standard with each and every Mac.

Big leap to move to a Mac when this is straight forward and easy to do with the free MS film apps

I've been in IT professionally for almost 30 years now, and have seen a lot of "stuff" come and go, and also some stuff persist almost unbelievably in spite of its technical incompetence (it's amazing what marketing can do!)
I had cause this time 4 years ago to replace in fact 2 PCs at home, for myself, wife, and daughter. And decided to Get A Mac. Wife & daughter very concerned, because of the change & what they might lose. So I also picked up a copy of VMWare Fusion (but could have got Parallels, or even looked at the freebie Virtualbox), so that if they needed to revert to anything on Windows they could do so, and not only that, but within the Mac environment, and even drag-n-drop between Mac OSX and Windows if need be!
And guess what - that was the worst £30 I've ever spent - they've made no use of it whatsoever!
So, for us, yes, it was a big change, but, hey, the human spirit is adaptable. And, quite frankly, you don't really come across many people who have made the change who then say they regret it - you get some, but there's always one ;)
However of course, 'your mileage may vary' and it depends on your investment in your current setup, what peripherals you might have, and so on, but as I said, you can still have access to Windows for legacy applications if you need it.
And the quality of the bundled "iLife" suite made the thing a joy to use right from Day One - and maybe that's the thing here - after years of BSoD, bizarre operating behaviour, viruses, endless updates, bugs, security loopholes etc, (re)discovering that computers can be a joy to use was, well, in my case at least, reinvigorating.
Each to their own of course ;)

Ah, the music's Mike Oldfield, Tubular Bells 2, so can't claim credit for that ;)
I actually started some additional filming a week ago, looking at doing a film based around Autumn. Need to do more for it, but am being scuppered by the weather at the moment - it's looking like all the leaves will have fallen by the time the weather permits
Boring for everyone else (sorry!), but I've also put up a couple of timelapse films I've done recently? In the "DIY Photography" and the "Specialist Subjects" forums (fora?) - and those do feature my own music ;)
