    At last, a Fox

    Hi All,

Couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted this, about 1600hrs, but poor light sadly, no Sun at all.

Now having never got near one before so have no idea of their behaviour I was unsure of what was best to do, start shooting a way off to at least get some shots in the can or wait until it got a bit closer?? in the end I decided to take some shots early so these are big crops. Now of course I am wondering whether I should have waited because I am not that happy with the sharpness??

No idea if it's a Dog Fox or a Vixen, it looks in good condition, maybe it's not very old.

Congratulations Paul. Its a this years cub and I would say its a Vixen. Always a difficult decision to make - do I start firing off, or wait for it to get closer, when to your dismay it disappears into the undergrowth and you got no shots at all. - been there done it got the tee shirt and video!
I would be happy with those, not always easy when they are in vegetation and the focus point hits a blade of grass or whatever.
If you encounter this again grab a shot or two then start making squeaking sounds - animals in distress. More than likely it will stop in its tracks to pick up the direction of the sound - Your opportunity!

I would echo Trev's comments. Another point about taking a few shots from a distance is the animal gets used to the sound of the shutter. Not sure about the 1DX II but my 1DX doesn't have the quietest shutter. The 7D II is much quieter.

Well done Paul, 3 cracking shots, under such pressure you should be happy with them.

Thanks for all the encouraging replies, I know they aren't great shots but I will always recall my first Fox encounter and I hope they will help me remember. I have been back to the same place several times hoping it would return at the same time but alas, not yet!
