Birds taken in M mode

Went for a walk and set the camera in M mode...ISO 400 SHUTTER 1/750 F 8.0.

Im not too keen on back views of birds but the blackbird looks fine with some detail in the blacks.

set the camera in M mode...ISO 400 SHUTTER 1/750 F 8.0.

did you meter off a mid tone for those settings ?

Thanks all for looking.

Stan i put the camera onto full auto setting and metered off the ground.
A tip from Colin C .
Then put the camera onto M mode and set the readings I adjusted the shutter speed,and ISO.

Was i correct in doing this?

On the black and white shots i was shooting into the sun and altered the shadows slider in DPP.

I also prefer front views but for some reason most of the gulls were flying towards the sun
