Really nice shot. How did you get close enough?
ISO 1600 - who remembers film days when (if you could get it) 1600 ISO film would have grain the size of rocks in comparison.
I never complain too much about the equipment we have these days, wish I was 21 again and could look forward to 50 years or so of this and further improvements ........

          thanks guys

How did you get close enough
the shot is taken from a woodland hide, which is about 30 or so metres long so you can move to where the birds land to get the best views. We often visit Warnham and this guy along with his mate are regular visitors so mostly it is just a question of waiting for one or other to turn up - we usually stay there all morning and get a wide variety of birds. The shooting distance on this one was around 10 metres and around 30% of the original frame is cropped off

modern cameras perform better all the time - this is a 7D II which for wildlife I am quite happy to go to 3200 without problems, I also used it extensively at 6400 in London the other week very successfully

Very nice Stan. Is that a new prop? It looks far more natural than the post they normally land on.

I always enjoy popping in and deliberately looking out for your pictures Stan (even if I don't have time to make comments now sorry) - always some good ones and this is no exception.

yes, a low one right next to the taller stump which he in fact spent most of the time on
