    Stilt and chicks

LU7A3380 Stilt and chicks by Benjamin, on Flickr
I would value opinions on the quality of this picture, taken with a new 100mm -400mm mk2 L, lens,
I have done only basic process in ACR ,and a crop, I have better quality images with my 70mm-200m f2,8 with 2x converter,
    thanks Ben

looking at the flickr image and zooming into main bird it looks pretty good to me - the water has an odd look to it, but I assume the main POI is the bird

Hi Ian, I agree the water has a funny look, I have done nothing with that, my main issue is the general quality of the feather detail

I zoomed as far as I could into the main bird and it looked pretty good to me - as an exercise why not zoom right into the bird so we can see the detail loss your talking about - 50-70 crop should do it, I know I've cropped a lot more with the lens with no loss

At what would be a typical print size it looks fine but the big version does have a sort of gritty/grainy texture. My first thought was that it was noise but that hardly seems likely at 250ISO. Have you pushed the Detail slider to a high value in ACR? That can induce a gritty effect I find.

Looks fine to me when zooming in on my iPad. Have you done any sharpening?

Hi, Sid,I am sure your are right about the detail slider, I did look into that, and you confirmed it, there was also a bit over aggressive sharpening to try and make a detailed image, a little here and there is my normal, a bit of frustration on my part, thanks so much to all,
