    Acorn Woodpecker

Acorn Woodpecker. As the name implies, they depend heavily on acorns for food. We stayed at Don Pedro lake, which is heavily planted with oak trees and we often saw 4 or 5 woodpeckers in the same tree collecting acorns, which they then took and stored in their "granaries" - which can be a dead tree or more often here any any posts or wooden buildings which happen to be available, in fact, there is hardly a post in the entire campground which has not become a granary. This shot is of a female

    How unusual.

Here we drill holes in posts and trees and stuff it full of food to attract Woodpeckers and there they do it all by themselves.

Great interesting shot Stan. I believe they will pick up sweet chestnuts if the acorn become scarce.

Nice shot Stan. If you hadn't explained it, I would have thought people had put the food there to attract the birds.
