Kingfisher - 1.4x MKIII extender

There has been some recent discussion over the 1.4x extender recently, so I thought I would post this image taken at the weekend. Taken on my biggest lens with the 1.4x attached, conditions were far from ideal in slightly bright overcast light, so camera settings were very much compromised from my norm.

ISO 1600
1/320sec
F8
Handheld.

I didn't want to up the ISO even further and I would normally like around 1/2,000sec for a Kingfisher, more if it's available. On this combination, F8 is wide open and I know I can just get away with the limited depth of field if the bird is perched, side on. If it is looking at me, the beak will probably be out of focus. Handheld, because the tripod was still in the boot of the car.

Iffy lighting, compromised settings, handheld and trying to use a 1.4x to fill the frame ............. sounds like a recipe for disaster!

So if that was with the 800mm + 1.4xTC, it would be1120mm focal length, that's pretty impressive Colin, and so is the resulting image.

No Trev. The Stour was still too high at the weekend, so I went to Blashford - Ivy Hide South. Had four sightings during the day, but they were all very brief. No preening or fishing, just a quick few seconds perch.

Yes that's the problem with Blashford, they don't seem to hang around - quick perch and their off again at Ivy South, perhaps I'll look in on the Goosander at least they stay around a bit longer, or they did! See how the weather fairs, I might give Slimbridge two days, I'm away on MOD stuff.
