Hi Trev, what time of the day you would say is most likely to be successful when looking, for one, with enough light of course?

Have only ever seen one as I recall and it was nearly dark

Hi Paul. Anytime time of day although they are notoriously difficult locate in woodland when at roost during the day. They huddle close to the tree trunk more often than not in dense woodland. Might be bit easier this time of year, with young in the nest they have to hunt more, which brings them out of cover. Its more a case of being in the right place at the right time.
I'm lucky with mine, it parks itself outside the bedroom window, its a male, the nest is further up the garden. All the shots I've taken have been out the bedroom window - see picture, you can see the owl under the dead branch and just above the lens hood - 20 feet away. I must make a confession, I help feed it by throwing bird seed in the grass under the perch, thus encouraging mice and voles.
