    Kestrel Update 27-05-2020

Chicks are developing fast and lots of stomping about in the nest

And feathers are more and more evident though some way to go. Doesn't stop lots of wing flapping though

Adults are working hard to provide enough food

Chicks are starting to get the idea of how to feed themselves

Now this was a big surprise. On a window ledge close to the nest was this pigeon. As you can see its had its head removed. Now this would be a exceptional prey item for a kestrel. A feral pigeon would be easily as big and heavy as the female and somewhat bigger then the male.

My own idea is this bird flew into the window and the kestrel decapitated it, maybe. Went this morning and the head is still there but no sign of the carcase. Can't imagine a kestrel being able to carry it.

Interesting pigeon theory/mystery about the demise of it!

        Thank you Anthony.

As for the pigeon, I expect the Police arrested it for sunbathing.

Another fantastic update. The chicks are growing very fast. Very strange situation regarding the pigeon. Lets hope it wasn't raising young.

Thanks for comments. We do have other birds of prey in the area, sparrowhawk and tawny owl which nests somewhere else in the building. Can't really see them being that close to the kestrel site but I suppose nothing is impossible.
