3 Merlins

Never seen one merlin before let alone 3 of them ! In between the two afternoon displays at ICBP they brought out 3 young merlins and posed them on a bough of a tree that had been placed in the flying field. Well its difficult enough to get two birds posing and looking the right way at the same time but three...nearly impossible. They did almost play ball though

Were you on a photographic day at the ICBP or was it just lucky you spotted them?

pure luck Dan. In between displays they sometimes do some flying training of the younger birds and Jemima, the boss, had one of the merlins for a quick practice. We missed the flight shots but then two falconers came out with the other two birds and set everything up on the field. It was mainly for the resident tog who got right up close with a short lens, I had to use my 300 + 1.4x from further away but it worked well

the trees in the background are a good 50 metres behind the birds so that combined with the long focal length has blurred it nicely

I had forgotten you were quite near - although when we go to ICBP we tend to only decide the day before when we are sure of the weather, which works quite well as all 4 times we have been the sun has shon all day long. Will give you a heads up next time.
This was the only shot i gotr of all three together but found this one of Dee's which i like

Nice shot of the 3 Merlins together Stan! In all the times I've been there, I've never seen a Merlin, but then I've only been once!

I'll check Dee's shot at home, as most pictures are blocked at my work.
