    Cinnabar Moth

Took these yesterday, I found it very challenging it was not still for very long!
I would welcome comments to help me improve, all help gratefully received.

    Thank you in advance,
    Rose

Nice shots but difficult subjects to capture as you say they don't stay still for long.
A smaller aperture would have given a greater depth of field allowing more of the subject to be in focus.

Thank you Tom and Bill for taking time to review and comment; it was difficult for me to keep track of where it was flying! The focus is off, next time I’ll try a smaller aperture.

        thanks again.

        Rose.

You do need a greater depth of field when photographing butterflies and moths side on. Perhaps not quite as much with butterflies if they have closed wings. I always try to get shots of both with their wings open, not a problem with moths! Also especially with butterflies don't let your shadow pass over them.

It was a good spot, shame that the focus is a little out but it can be tricky to follow a fast moving moth charging about the border. The MkIV has an iTR function as part of its autofocus system that track colours, I haven’t tried it as it wasn’t on the MkIII and it’s not on the R but it might be worth a try.

Thank you Trev and Ian for looking at the photographs and your valuable comments. Food for thought and lots of things to think about on a camera I am still getting to grips with.
