    Stomp around Lee Valley

Cory and I spent a good 6 hours walking around a large part of the Lee Valley lakes today, really beautiful area if anyone is stuck for somewhere to go for a day out. Anyway - few shots from today's stomp, all with 1D mk4 / 300mm 2.8 mk2 and the 2x extender mk3. So all handheld at 600mm (camera shake was def an issue)

    #1 - 1/500, f/5.6, iso 200 - Long tailed tit playing with it's food

    #2 - 1/320, f/8, iso 100 - Incoming Canadian Goose

#3 - 1/800, f/6.3, iso 100 - Cormorant fly by (needed quicker shutter speed really)

#4 - 1/800, f/5.6, iso 640 - Coot on the approach, my best coot shot to date

    #5 - 1/640, f/5.6, iso 640 - A more perfect model I couldn't have asked for

#6 - 1/640, f/5.6, iso 250 - Best I could get of the 'Lapwing' (seeing them everywhere now I know the name) into the sun and amonst the grasses

Need to go again either without the extender or a monopod / tripod as my keeper rate really was depressing. Thanks for looking and as always - feel free to comment / critique

I'll admit that I'm not a bird fan, but the 1st image is a cracker. Well done!

Great set David - that combo is one to die for. The X2 ext. really (imho) will only work really well on a 2.8 lens. So I guess its birds and not bikes for a while then? A mono - pod is the way forward with that combo. What I do is rest it on my foot so its easy to swivel and raising ones toes gives a little more height for getting the subject correctly in the frame - well thats what I do and it seems to work for me!
      All the best -R

Nice set David, 1,4 and 5 are the best for me.

From seeing work from others using this lens, I wonder if you would be better using a 1.4 extender rather than the 2x, just a thought and not in any way a criticism.

            Good shots David.

The 300mm with a 2x shouldn't have a problem with camera shake as long as your shutter speed is above 1/600sec. Keep the ISO up to enusre you have the high shutter speed and switch IS off.

Thanks guys - Colin. . . I wonder if that is where I'm going wrong, I am shooting with the IS set to #3 . . . looks like another trip / day at the lakes.

God variety of shots David - the coot is spot on - very difficult to get the white and black just right and a nice sharp clear eye. Good detail in the LTT, aleays seem to be in the trees so difficult to get an acceptable background

Good set David and looks like a worthwhile "stomping area" until the bike season starts again.

Great set of images,i've always wondered if you need IS when using high ISO and fast shutter speeds.
I need to get out and do some experimenting.
