    CD with glycerine drops

Three drops of glycerine (dyed blue) on the back of a CD. Studio flash head lit. Colours boosted in ACR. Tidied in CS4.

    1/125s, ISO100, f16, 50D, Sigma 105mm macro.

    C+C welcome.

Amazing clarity, the colours are excellent. Not sure if I would have preferred to see all three drops in the brighter area - the one in the dark appears to be floating above the surface a bit. Great imagination!

Well, one thing that Rob has in spades is imagination coupled with the ability to make something special out of everyday objects, even if it is fuelled with bunny dust.

Edits OK as long as they're not B&W conversions.

Thank you. Petros, Stuart. The wet weather in Wales forces one to compromise.... indoors.

A couple more from the same session. For these I chilled the WB in ACR.

Thanks for sharing these Rob. Like the concept and love the results.

I may even be inspired to try something like this myself rather than just watching TV tonight.

            Cheers

                Well cheers Rob.

I am now officially obsessed and could well be on the way to divorce.... lol.

How hard could this be I though? Just take a few arty shots of a CD. Many hours, several rows (should have been painting the kitchen) and much head scratching later, I have what can only be described as some very boring images of CD's.

Not giving up just yet though. Can I ask, what did you use as a background or was it included with some computer trickery?

Any tips would be much appreciated (not to mention a bed for a few weeks if the divorce goes through)..... :)

                Cheers

I appreciate how hard this is after playing about until the wee hours and failing miserably! I know it is all to do with the lighting, but could not get this dark effect that you have beautifully managed! Lovely shots!

Are we talking CDs here...or divorce? I can advise on both. I would not suggest divorce. It can get expensive and messy.

No real trickery in Photoshop involved. I put the CD on a sheet of black perspex - that's what gives the nice sheen to the dark area in the first shot. I used a single studio flash head with a softbox to keep the light soft. The light was on the left side and fairly high up, pointing down. In shot #1 it was actually the only shot I took. Luck.

In Photoshop I boosted the colours using my Velvia Photoshop Action (you can get instructions and download here http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/for....htm#post19755). Spent about 10 mins with my Wacom pad and pen getting rid of the dust. Shots #2/3 also chilled the WB to get bluer effect. You must shoot this sort of shot in RAW.

Thanks very much for the tips and explanation Rob, very kind.

I will be giving them all a go over the next few days.

                      Cheers
