Nice ones. Do you have any without the rim of the catch tank showing? I'm just trying drips in the square tray and positioning the camera to avoid including the far edge of the tray.

What sort of mixture are you using? I've made up a concentrated Guar Gum mix (1 tsp in 6 cups of water) which I mixed in warm water in a blender. I filtered it through 2 layers of the wife's tights (with permission). This concentrate I then mixed 1 part Guar Gum mix to 2 parts water and put that in the reservoir. The catch tank is plain water with some surfactant (to reduce the surface tension of the water). Lighting is a problem as I don't want to increase the power of the guns too much to avoid subject movement.

I also need to increase the shooting distance somewhat as there's not enough depth of focus.

    Regards ,
    Norman

I have done very few in the large catch tank, much prefer using a small tumbler or a dish which makes it easier to control the light by putting it quite near the background. The main reason for using the large catch tank is to get the whole reflection, like this one from last year

but to make sure the edge of the tray is not showing you do have to shoot at quite an angle which is where i think your depth of focus problems are coming from. I usually shoot around f18-20, ISO 100-200, which seems sufficient in most cases. With the lighting, if you are lighting from the front put them at 90 degrees to the splash and as close as you possible can and then eith power at 1/64 - 1/128 the light should be enough. If it isnt then just increase the ISO or reduce the shutter speed a little

Cheers Tom ; Just shows that no matter how many times you do it, there are still going to be days when nothing goes right

                Great set Stan

I'll be back to the splashes as soon as I've stopped walking round the isles of Tesco's looking for xantham gum

                  Hi Chris

Just checked online at Tesco and appears they no longer have it but it is available in Sainsburys, which is where I got mine, in the home baking section. I didnt really have a clue what i was looking for so i had to ask. A picture of it may help

Re: Not a good day for splash so...

When I started with splash photography Joe suggested using Karo Light Corn Syrup as an alternative to the Gum. I got mine from Tesco online and had them deliver it to the door as I couldn't find any in the store.

I simply use a mix of the Karo and water in the header tank and vary the ration between 10-15% Karo to water, I keep the water as cold as possible as I find this gives the best effects
