    Re: Something from the weekend

I learnt something from this weekend too. I have pretty much always shot Av, but in the quest for better images and lowering the iso I have found the limitation in this type of photography. I had quite a few shots where I had used Av to set up with a given shutter speed, using the narrower aperture to gain depth of field where possible. What I missed until reviewing the shots is to allow enough headroom for the exposure change of the darker subjects entering my frame, which with Av dropped my shutter too low. I will be adapting my approach to use Tv in the future.

good set and some excellent images there - I would say moving to TV is a sound plan, after all the speed is the most important thing not the DoF

Habit more than anything, I started using Av very early on in my slr days and got used to it. It's only really now that my results are good enough to show its weakness with this type of subject.

Why not use Manual and get control of both?

A very nice set. I would agree with Andy why not use manual - set shutter speed, aperture and use auto ISO if you have it

Thanks guys. I'm tempted to try manual, but I fear I might be doing an awful lot of adjustment after the event. It's quite a fast changing sport, particularly so when the sun is coming in and out as it was this weekend. I have just started to get used to using exposure compensation properly for the darker dogs and the low down shots with lots of sky behind them but things move very fast in flyball so there isn't much time for tweaks.

Fantastic set, my fav being 2 & 5. The expression the dog's face (#2), he/she really looks like he/she is having a whale of a time and the timing on # 5 is spot on. All pretty sharp, great colours, as a big dog lover/owner I really enjoyed these. Nice.

I own a GSD (German Shepherd Dog & he's my 4th) and both his parents where agility champs or something along them lines. Just a point that might interest.

Thanks Gary. There was a GSD doing flyball at this competition, which you don't often see. I have a soft spot for them too as I grew up with one.
