    Operation Yorknite

I had a run over to RAF Leeming today to see what the Swiss Air Force were up to. Leeming is hosting a joint exercise called Yorknite, which includes some night flying .

The visitors have apparently been breaking the sound barrier over the North Sea which; made some people along the North East Coast think that there had been an earthquake or two!

A problem became apparent when I arrived, I should have taken a pair of steps to allow me to shoot over the perimeter fence in the official viewing area. I had to retreat from the fence and shoot over it rather than through it. In addition I had reset my camera and didn't notice that I was shooting jpg's only

#1 The first of the visitors getting airborne.

#2 Quite a smart looking aircraft.

#3 Locals joining in the fun

#4 I had hoped to get some decent images of these, sadly mainly due to the problem I mentioned earlier I didn't do so.

It's described as their "Air Force 1" Trev, I'm not sure what part it plays in the current exercise

Lovely set. Some great spots at Leeming where you don't need ladders thankfully if you do head back - we've got them for another 2 weeks yet. 3 Cougars due in today as well.

I'm hoping to get back to Leeming possibly Thursday this week, where would you recommend to shoot without steps?

Sorry - just seen your reply. I've attached a google maps grab from one of the spotter pages on FB in case you head over while they're still here. A lot depends on which runway they're on but plenty of scope for the ladder-less.

1 is the waterworks end. Great for finals if they're on 16. Good view down the runway (distant) and nice 3/4 head ons as they turn on finals.
2 is the viewing area which you'll know
3 is the Wall. Long low wall which gives uninterrupted views of take off and landing regardless of what end they're on.
4 Crash gate 8. Need a ladder to get over the fence for taxi shots but can get some nice landing shots without if they're on 34.
5 is the best recoveries spot for 34 - nice side ons just before landing
6 is good for finals when they're on 34. Can either park up just after the flyover or walk the track from spot 5.

Couple of good FB groups for Leeming worth a look if your on there. RAF Leeming Spotters and RAF Leeming Enthusiasts.

Thanks for the information Tim, much appreciated. I didn't manage to get back there yesterday. Hopefully I'll manage a trip next week.
