Sherman tank - Operation "Tiger", 1944

This Sherman tank was lost to the sea in 1944 during the ill-fated operation "Tiger" in which 639 servicemen lost their lives. The operation was a training exercise for D-day and as such all information regarding the tragedy was supressed for fear of damaging morale. In 1984 the tank was recovered from the seabed and now stands at Slapton Sands as a memorial to all those brave souls who lost their lives as part of the struggle to protect ours.

It certainly is - this is the website of the company that provides the protective paint (of which there seems to be a multitude of layers!)

If you are interested in finding out more about the paint and story behind the Sherman Tank in Slapton Sands, read our article today!
