Knockhill Weekend - Cars and Bikes

Had a couple of trips up to Knockhill again this weekend. Weather has been stunning, which for those that know the area, sunshine is a rarity.

Saturday was Car Testing day. Various classes of cars in different sessions. I've got to admit to having a bit brain fade and simply could not get the camera to do what I wanted. Used my 24-105mm lens which after today will stay in my bag when I go up there.

Anyway, a couple of shots from Saturday...

Re: Knockhill Weekend - Cars and Bikes

So I got home and reviewed the pics I'd taken and was disappointed that I had obviously not thought about the basics with a lot being soft focus, wrong focus point and just plain rotten.

So off I went back today, removed my 24-105mm lens and replaced it with my old cheapie Sigma 70-300mm that I carry about and never attach. I also forced myself to switch of rapid fire shooting for single shot to think about what I was doing.

    What do you think....better??

Really love the bike shots, they're all really sharp and there's a great sense of speed on the last two!!
      Brilliant

Not bad at all, cars are a little central in the shot (I am guilty of this on more than one occasion) and not too keen on longer crops, 16x9 ?

Bike shot's are lovely and sharp and my favourites of the lot.

Motorsport is not an exact science and you always will get some failures and even more so when you are experimenting and trying to get your own look to the shot.

Your mid range zoom wasn't the best lens choice, but much better that you try it for yourself. That said, the Focus and MGB are well panned and seem sharp enough and I would have been quite happy with those for side on shots. Personally, I go for 3/4 front shots - you have to be a little more cautious with the shutter speed and not quite so easy to pan, but I think the cars look better. Your timing must be pretty good, to know when the Escort is likely to get on the overun and shoot some flame. You have to anticipate that, rather than react to it!

The bikes all look sharper and much of that will be down to the lessons you came away with from day 1. It's all a learning curve, mastering the techniques, fully understanding your equipment and developing your own style.

Thanks for the pointers and comments folks. Much appreciated. I'll hopefully get out more and try and improve. I did have a play with the bike with the shutter speed. Find a location, set a speed, fire a few shots, review and adjust if needed....more thought into day two.

Colin, do you have any examples of the 3/4 front shots. I can't quite picture what you mean. Thanks.

                  Lovely photos!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's the photo not the equipment that counts.

I think you are being a little hard on yourself the cars in the first set are not that bad at all, the bikes are fabulous however, thanks for the tips Colin going to the German TC meet at Brands in a couple of weeks first time with DSLR.
