    Tug boats

    Hi All,

Went to Rochester last week and while on a walkabout came across these 3 tugs. While I was photographing the red tug a guy working on it asked if I'd like to see the engine. No brainer, I love old machinery. The down side I didn't have a flash gun - so up the ISO went to 51200 and got some reasonable pictures.

This old tug was used in the narrower parts of the River Thames - look at the counter balance on the funnel. This was so it could get under low bridges.

One of the pistons - notice the car engine piston. I'm really surprised this picture came out because there was next to no light in this area. Well done the 1DX!

    TTFN,
    Neil

                Thanks, guys.

Dee, the engine is very quite. The guy told me the engine makes a lovely smooth throbbing noise when it's running, even at maximum revs which are only 275 rpm. He also said the two generators make far more noise.

Paul, the 1DX is superb in those conditions, but I think the 5D III would be even better, because of the extra mega pixels it has over the 1DX.

Neil surprising for such a big lump of engine. Some time ago I visited the fishing heritage centre at Grimsby. They had a fishing trawler that you could go on. In the engine room they play a tape of that it sounds like when the engine is running. I though I would need new ear drums. Amazing that this one is quiet when you consider what a tug does.
