    CANON 400F5.6 L USM lens

Hey all, I may have missed this looking thru the lens post ,but I am looking at the CANON 400 f5.6L USM lens. I know this is not an IS lens. For those of you who have this lens ,how do you like it, does it meet your expectations? I will be using the lens in the Rocky Mountain National park next summer.... I am also looking at the 100-400 IS lens..Your thoughts and recommendations will be welcomed.

Re: CANON 400F5.6 L USM lens

It's a rock solid lens for wildlife use ,I.e extremely fast to focus ,accurate and reliable ,there are a couple of niggles as you state no I.s and also minimum focus distance is not very good so if something close pops up it might be to close ,however for bang for bucks it ticks all the boxes .

The 100-400 mkii is a super lens that overcomes all this but at a price ,it's your money .

There are a couple of alternatives that might be better suited I.e the sigma 150-600 models either the lighter C model or heavier S model the downsides of these being a f6.3 minimum aperture and the S weighs in at a healthy 3kg . While the C is cheaper and lighter

hi I own the 400 5.6 a very solid lens its best with bif or birds in flight and the is, is not needed if you run over 1000 on your settings is very hand holdable I pair mine with the 70-200 4is l and the 1.4 tele mk3 and a monopod.
            ti1 70D 5Dmk3 10-22 ef-s 50mm1.8 mk1 70-200 4 is l 400 5.6l 100mm macro is l 18-135 stm ef-s
            1.4 tele mk3 now the 85 1.8 ef lens 16-35 4 is l 50 1.4 canon

I've used the 400 f5.6 for years and never missed the IS as I always use 1/640 minimum. Very fast focus and still one of the best at the price for BIF.

I've just seen a 100-400 MkI at Calumet in Manchester for 600...just while I picked up my new 100mm f2.8L macro...in case anyone is interested. I'm getting interested in the Tamron 150-600...has good reviews, light and good value. Don't know if its better/worse than the Sigmas of Canons.

I shoot most of my animal and bird shots with the 400 5.6 and it is brilliant , fast focus , not too heavy and with shooting wildlife I am usually using shutter speeds which negate the need for IS .

I love my 100-400, use it almost daily, as it doesn't say mark2 on it anywhere I'm guessing it's a mark one. Use it for macro as well and pretty much always hand held, used it for birds in flight and moon shots, can't fault it. Coupled with a 10-18 wide angle I use pretty much nothing else now.

Good evening everybody, thanks again for everyone's input. After looking and using a friends 70-200 L IS lens, THAT is the lens I went with. Ordered the lens EF70-200 f2.8 L IS II Tuesday. It will be here tomorrow (Friday) .I decided to wait and possibly get the 600 mm lens as we are looking at going to Alaska in the near future....

                        Gregory,

I know the Rocky mountains fairly well- Banff, Jasper, British Columbia having been there twice and there is a possibilty of a third and final visit. On account of the terrain etc I would any day suggest a zoom lens and perhaps a lighter one like the 70-300mm f4-5.6 L IS USM lens. On my previous visits I took the Canon 70-200mm f4L lens(plus a 1.4x tc) and that was quite adequate. Anyway, enjoy your trip and it is a marvelous country to visit and the Rockies are breath taking.

It might be worth waiting till the middle of this year before buying a long zoom as canon are reportedly bringing out a 200-600mm non L type zoom lens shortly ,in answer to the sigmas and tamrons .the marketplace is certainly getting interesting for both canon and Nikon owners .could be a interesting year ahead .
The one thing that would make me stick with sigma is the ability to upgrade and fine tune my lens via the USB hub ,wonder if canon will take this route as well
