I could never get my Microsoft remote connection to work properly between two windows PCs so resorted to VNC.

When it did occasionally work it too still suffered a minor lag like VNC and have to say as long as you don't try gaming VNC is workable.

I figured it was a blocked port or similar. How do you unblock a port on the Mac? I know my way around a PC but the Mac is a new challenge, but a nice one.

Oh I thought that Microsoft remote would be lag free! Id like to try it if I can but if not then VNC it will be.

          Alan,

Open System Preferences, Security & Privacy, Firewall. Click the + and add Microsoft Remote Desktop (or whatever program you want to allow) and just use the defaults.

I don't use the OS X firewall, I use Little Snitch as it gives me a lot more information and control, I allow TCP port 3389 outgoing to a list of servers which I connect to regularly.

Thanks again for the additional info. I have downloaded Little Snitch and will try to see if that allows MRD to work. I've resigned myself to the fact I'll be using VNC.
