    New Laptop

Hi all with a bit of luck Mr Tax man owes me some money so was thinking of perhaps getting a new laptop. This will be used for the usual stuff but also for editing my photos etc. Advice welcomed on a spec or a model etc.

I recently bought a Dell XPS-15, same spec as this one although nowhere near that price - it came from the Dell Outlet. The 4K screen is amazing!

Prices are exorbitant, tech spec tends to be average, ergonomics and design are excellent, fantastic ecosystem if you are an Apple enthusiast, system and applications are generally easier to install / configure / use. I have to use Windows for work but, with the exception of an Intel NUC and some Raspberry Pis, everything else (tv / tablet / phone / desktop / laptop) is Apple ...

Definitely worth considering their (official) refurb store - equipment generally indistinguishable from brand new, complete with 12 month warranty and usually around 10-15% cheaper - sometimes nudging 20%.

I do love how they show how stunning the screen can be, as least Dell have tried to be a bit cleverer in showing 4K, it is like TV adverts for TV's showing the screen image and how superb they are, colours clarity detail etc... when the image on the screen is only as good as the screen you are watching it on, LoL, so if the TV they are advertising has an image quality that you think is superb... you already have that TV in front of you

I have a Dell Inspiron 13 5000 series with Core i3 processor for work....and it really struggles with Lightroom.....my MacBook air from 2011 is much better.

              Re: New Laptop

My old laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1545, had a Celeron processor and I'd upgraded it to as high spec as it could take, i.e. 4GB RAM & 500GB SSD. The time it took to process a single RAW file to PEG in DPP was around 75 seconds. The XPS-15 takes less than 15 seconds.
