Hi Mazzie,
It takes the place of using a mouse so any software including Word, you can sign a letter if you wish. It is just the same as writing with a pen (which of course what it is) and the tip is pressure sensetive so you can draw thick or thin lines.
I have the Bamboo which allows either finger control (same finger controls as an iPhone so you can expand or contract the item on your screen) or the pen.
