    R7 focus issues

Has anyone else had problems with consistently unsharp images from R7, especially with telephoto lenses? Every single pic I took with R7 and RF100-500 was hopelessly soft. From the sample pics I sent to Canon, the problem has been diagnosed as soft focus. Removing the UV filter from the lens mostly eliminates the problem (though some pics are simply out of focus as focussing is not entirely consistent). The soft focus also occurs with EF300mm lens and 18 -150 kit lens. Filters for the new lenses are brand new Hoya. As a nature and marine photographer I can't imagine working without protective filters on all my lenses, not to mention using a polariser occasionally. Has anyone had the same problem? Are there known issues with lens filters affecting focus on mirrorless cameras?

Only used Sigma 150-600 C with my R7 and not had any issues that aren't related to me.

No problem whatsoever with mine - send to a service centre, they will sort it.

Thanks for the replies, suggests there is definitely something wrong with my camera, not a general problem with the R7. I'm going to send it back. But here is the latest reply from Canon - has anyone heard before that they don't recommend using a UV filter? And if we are to rely only on the lens hood for protection, strange that some lenses are supplied without hoods....

"Canon do not recommend using UV filters as the camera and body are designed to work together as designed. If you want to protect the lens from scratches and or bumps, I would recommend using the lens hood provided. This will stop dust and dirt getting on the front element of the lens.

If you would like to use a filter, I would suggest using only MRC - Multi Resistant Coating lens filters. These have a special scratch resistant coating, that do not affect the light entering the lens."

Have you updated to the new firmware version?
It seems to that the new firmware gives soft images.

I've not updated my R7 but had read about this video. Just to save you a bit of time goto 5.50 and guy tells you to reset everything.

Thanks, that is the first real clue! The images the guy shows in the video look very much like the problem I have. Unfortunately the problem was the same before and after updating the firmware and resetting the camera. Camera has just been back to Canon - they claim to have recalibrated and checked the focus system but there is no change whatsoever in image quality. wish i'd bought the R6

I just bought an R7 and RF100-400, and had problems with soft focus at full zoom. After grappling with lots of settings, resets and firmware updates, I finally found it was the UV Filter! As soon as I removed it I got instantly better results even with just default settings. (Firmware 1.3.1, and it was a Hoya filter)
