    Flash setting

I was asked to take some photos of the indoor bowling. I was using a Canon 6d, 35mm F2 IS and a 430EX11 speedlight (1/60, f4.5, flash on auto). What setting should I used so that the barkground is darker, so the player stands out more.

    Thanks for the help

Perhaps a smaller aperture e.g. f8 may work.

I'm not an expert but I would say that, while your flash is on auto it won't matter what settings the camera is on, the flash will try and give you the same exposure.

I changed the metering to partial and increased the apature to f8. I also tried the flash and camera on manual but they didn't work at all!

I agree with Deg5y… but if you already tried manual I guess it’s just down to reducing the flash power until you get it right. On a wedding course I remember that if you double the distance from your subject you need an extra stop of light…in that case getting closer to your subject and setting the flash to correctly expose for the subject - will result in less flash power and thus darker background…..I think that logic works?

lower flash power, larger app diffusing the BG???? or mover the subject further down the rink

The picture you take with a flash is a combination of the natural ambient light plus that of the flash. To make the background a bit darker i would set to under expose the picture so the subject nearer to you lit by the flash is more prevalent. How much to under expose by you’ll have to experiment with. May be worth a try.
