    Usually I use a 70-200 f/4L with a 1.4x extender.

    Noticeably slower in focussing
    Hi Andy,

If you found the 100-400mil slower then there's something wrong with it. I have tried the 70-200 f2.8 + 1.4TC and that was much slower in the AF department. My 100-400 is good throughout the whole range, but like Colin says f8+ the for best setting. Its a lens that does like a lot of light.

    TTFN,
    Neil

She still loves you Colin and should have sent you a Christmas Card but was "down under" over Christmas and missed the post.....

Good light and stop it down to F8 with a high shutter speed. Mine didn't fall off at all at 400mm, was slightly softer at 70mm but you'd be hard pushed to noticed.

A very versatile telephoto zoom and in many respects I wish I still had one.

The sweet spot, as you call it, is at f/8 on the Canon 100-400mm lens.
There is a slight drop (only slight) in resolution at 400mm.

Llanelli WWT is on my list for this year.

Canon 100-400 f4-5.6L IS USM Lens

Hi, I have borrowed one of these for a week to see if it will augment my wildlife togging with some better closeups etc. Usually I use a 70-200 f/4L with a 1.4x extender.

Noticeably slower in focussing, but not by a lot, I'm just wondering what the "sweet spot" of this lens is in terms of aperture and zoom.

If you'd like to share your experience with this lens, I'd be most grateful.
