    Upgrade Lens Advice

    Hi All

I am looking to upgrade my Sigma 50-500mm to either a Canon 100-400mm L or a Canon 400mm L, I would love to upgrade to the 500mm but this is out of my price range.
Any advice on which to choose.

    Many thanks

    Hello Warrenden

Second hand 500mm? They do crop up occasionally.

If not, look through the Exif data of most of your photo's and check what focal length was used from the 50 - 500mm. If it's around 400mm and above, then go for the 400mm. If it's a mixture of focal lengths, then go for the 100 - 400mm.

      Re: Upgrade Lens Advice

Some real sound advice from Colin.
Remember the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L has IS and the 400mm f/5.6L does not.

Also consider the Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS prime lens plus a X1.4 extender, this is a proven como, and would give a 300mm and 420mm option.

I think I'd be inclined to go for the 100-400, as it will give you the range but also IS... I find IS invaluable, plus its very versatile

          Hi all

Thanks for the advice, I would love the 500mm, but even the old ones are selling for around £2500. So the versatility of the 100-400mm wins over the fixed 400mm.

            Hi Warrenden,

You don't say what sort of pictures you take. I have a 100-400mm L lens, but I prefer to use my 300mm and add a TC if I need an extra bit of 'reach'.

I have a 300mmf4 L lens and with the Canon 1.4 TC I have a reach of 672mm on my crop 60D. On a full frame it would be 420mm. I find that this lens is quite adequate, light and easy to hand hold.

                    Hi Thndr-struck

The lens is the non OS one. Sigma APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3EX GG purchased in 2009 and used about dozen times.

                    Thanks

                      Hi Neil

Nothing specialised, from the seals at Donna Nook to motor bike sand racing, but my main interest is macro work (focus stacking). I have a 5D MKII, with a Canon 24-105mm L lens and a Canon 70-300mm L lens. The problem is my wife also takes photo,s at the same time with her Canon 50D with Canon 24-105mm L lens. We then share the Sigma 50-500 or the Canon 70-300mm. So I was looking at getting a better quality lens to replace the Sigma.
So it was a case of a fixed lens or a more versatile zoom?.

                      Hope that makes sense.

                      Thanks

                        Re: Upgrade Lens Advice

Ah ok, have you considered the new OS version? I have one and enjoy it very much. The long end will not match a prime lens, ever, but its focal range is wonderful. Only major drawback is maybe its weight. It is plenty fast enough on my 7d. I researched many comparisons between the 100-400mm canon and the sigma, and apparently at 400mm it is just as good as the canon, with better OS. Personally I do not like the push-pull action of the 100-400, but everybody differs. Only scenario that I have not used the lens is birds in flight, mainly because with two small kids, trying to stalk birds is difficult to find time for ;-)

                          Re: Upgrade Lens Advice

I once had a Sigma 50-500mm but found I used it at 500 95% of the time so decided to change. I borrowed one friend's 100-400mm and another friend's 400mm f5.6L and found that the prime definitely gave superior results for bird photography. Many members of a bird club I belong to use the 400 with very few the 500mm. Birds in flight are a doddle with the 7D/400mm combo.

                            Wildlife and some sports: 100-400
Birds in flight mostly: 400 5.6 fixed
Birds still: 100-400, 400 fixed is great too, 300+1.4

I see that 100-400 will have more application to shoot with that fixed 400 5.6, so i will go with that.

I have 300 f2.8IS and 100-400 and i still don't know which another lens i should get for long far subject such as birds and animals[wildlife].
