My initial thoughts on Canon 17-85 IS USM lens

I have had this lens since the 5th November and only really had a chance today to try it out. It was very overcast today but thought I would post some images. Overall I am very happy with the lens in terms of IQ and sharpness it is certainly sharper than my Tamron 55-200. I'm also quite impressed with the colour tones and contrast.

All these were taken handheld with IS on

I really didn't like my copy (and indeed traded it in against a 14/2.8 II), but after DXO supported it I was able to re-process the Raw files and get significantly better images than I had before... (I hated the CA at wide angles BTW).

I noticed the CA at wide angles but to be honest I hardly use it at 17mm but like you say DXO sorts any major issue fairly well

A nice set of images, well done.
I first owned the 17-85mm back in 2008 when I purchased it together with the Canon 40D.
I was very happy with the lens and the images taken with it.

Re: My initial thoughts on Canon 17-85 IS USM lens

I purchased this lens with my 350D way back in 2005, as my original EF-S lens It was very expensive at the time, but was the only Canon zoom of that sort of range. It was certainly much superior than the 'coke bottle' bottom which was normally supplied with that camera. It had its drawbacks, as have been mentioned, but I continued to use it as my everyday lends with a subsequent 400D and a 40D,with some very promising photos. However, about a year ago I upgraded to the 15 - 85 mm lens, and that certainly is a far better lens. That is the lens I would now recommend as the everyday lens. After six years using the 40D, I have recently succumbed to a 70D, where again the 18 - 85 is proving its worth. Recently returned from island hopping along the Dalmatian coast, with some very satisfying shots.

I love the first bird picture, it looks like the bird is a bit grumpy. But the 17-85 lens is a great lens, I have this one on my 550D. And you can make great photo's!
                      With kind regards,
